Description
Short version: Barrie's the easiest way to make space and get under the cap, even if the trade's a likely L. Ottawa could use him to amp up their powerplay, so we trade him there. Braun provides a defensive presence at 3RD to help Broberg develop.

EDM
  1. 2023 7th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Ottawa's probably the best fit for Tyson next year: their PP finished 21st in GF/60 last year, and while some of that was bad luck, they don't have a ton of good "setters" (players who can improve sh% off of their passes by hitting tape cleanly, making cross-ice passes that make goalies move, etc.) or a top-end PP quarterback (Chabot and Brannstrom tied for the team lead in PPO GAR at 0.6) Tyson's 5.3 PPO GAR tied for 3rd in the NHL among Ds and he's been an above-average setter his whole career. The deal leaves Ottawa 3.4 million for Formenton and Brannstrom, which should be fine, and they get Hamonic and Talbot off the books next year and Zaitsev the year after that.
OTT
  1. Barrie, Tyson
Additional Details:
Tyson Barrie is a solid and underrated player. He led all Oilers d-men in GAR last year and over the last 3 years. But the Oilers powerplay can survive without Barrie thanks to McDavid/Drai/RNH, and a stronger defensive 3RD frees Kulak up to either form a shutdown pair with Ceci or provide a safety blanket for Bouchard, while Broberg gets some room to grow with a safety blanket of his own.

The trade is a loss. That's what happens when you let your cap space go negative with an RFA left to sign, especially since Tyson needs a specific fit.
2.
EDM
  1. Braun, Justin
Additional Details:
Braun's a puck-eater. No offense for either team when he's on the ice. Doesn't lead to good boxcars or pricey contracts, especially at 35, but it's a cheap way to get a decent player and a fine partner for a young puck-mover.

I doubt Philly signed Braun just to trade him.

Ottawa doesnt take barrie. Their issue lies with not having enough guys who can shut things down on the back end. Barrie is talented offensively but terrible defensively, and the sens aren't looking for that. Especially with having puck movers like Sanderson and Brannstrom

A one-year deal for a 35-year old on a rebuilding team usually means they hope to deal him at the deadline. I'm just speeding up the process.

I'm not sure if Philly is actually rebuilding, but with that roster they certainly aren't contending.

The PP is the main draw here, Chabot and Brannstrom's 5v5 puck movement hasn't helped on the man advantage much. Plus, their current best puck-mover on the right side is either Nikita Zaitsev or Artem Zub.

Also Zaitsev isn't much of a defensive upgrade from Barrie. And Hamonic might be a downgrade. That right side is WEAK.

I agree with the right side being weak, but pretty soon you'll have Bernard-Docker on the right side who is a defensive heavy back end guy. It would seem to me that the sens are keeping that side open for when he's ready. Zub is only 26, still lots of years left for him to flourish, he's shown great promise already. You're also forgetting Brannstrom can play both sides on the back end as well.

Brannstrom and Chabot weren't producing much offense sure, but they are (or were) on a lottery pick team lol, of course their numbers are going to be low. Watch the numbers jump now with the additions of Debrincat and Giroux.
