Quoting: roguegator
We have just over $13M coming off the books for next year (expiring UFA contracts) and only need to resign a back-up goalie as other holes can be filled from within the organization (but even with your guess of $8M for these two, that leaves another 5 ish to bolster the lineup further if desired). Outside of making a run at Tavares - which I don't think is likely - there is no need to pinch pennies for the next few years as GMJN2 has things lined up for all of our big resigning needs money wise.
While losing Honka hurts a bit, the skill these two bring would be a boost both now and moving forward.
Let's say the salary cap in 2018-19 is $80M.
Current cap hit of our team is around $74M. This will make $6M of cap space.
From Roussel's, Hamhuis' and Lehtonen's ending contracts we'd get $11,65M of free cap space
This added to the $6M, it makes space of about $18M on the draft day.
The players you've sold makes almost the same amount of money that Galchenyuk will pay, so they price will stay at the same.
After this, we must resign a couple of players, such as Domi, Janmark, Elie, Smith and Johns as RFAs, and if we like, players like Lehtonen, Roussel, Hamhuis and Pateryn as UFAs.
Myself, I'd resign them with the contracts like these
Janmark - cap hit: $3,250,000 | term: 3 years
Domi - cap hit: $2,800,000 | term: 2 years
Lehtonen - cap hit: $2,500,000 | term: 2 years
Roussel, Johns, Hamhuis, Pateryn (maybe not everyone) - cap hit: around $1,5-2M | term: 1-3 years
Elie and Smith - cap hit: around $1M | term: 1-2 years
These contracts make about $10-12M bucks, which leaves Stars around 6M left. So yes, the math will work. We can afford to do this, I'll give you that
What I'm more concerned about is are the players we're getting worth the players we are losing. Domi, for example, has only had 3 goals this season. If he cannot raise his level, he is not going to bolster anything in our team - he'd be a just a waste of money. Galchenyuk also hasn't really reaches his full potential yet, making him a certain risk, if we were to give one of our great d-prospects in exchange for him. Also I'm quite sure that Habs will want more - they are not going to let Chucky go cheap. Also, this would lead us to have a hole to fill in our team - we currently do not have a 2nd pair RHD in our system. I'm not confident that Johns or Pateryn could fill that place, so I think we might need to make another trade.
And personally, I wouldn't want to trade Shore. I like him. When I see him on the ice, it looks like he gives us the full 100% from himself. He's got the attitude that a winning team needs.
And about acquiring Tavares? THAT would be one interesting move
