Description
I guess I have to explain this trade.

What Tampa gets is obvious, they get Karlsson.
The talk is about Sergachev but I'd rather offer up Cal Foote. I'm only giving Ottawa one first round pick since Ryan is part of the deal, they'll get two second round picks and Erne who still is young enough to develope.

Why Callahan and Coburn in return? Well..
It's basically Ryan vs. Callahan/Coburn.
Coburn have one year left and can have some value on the trade market this summer. They'll retain salary and get a second round pick for him.
Now he's gone so it's Ryan and Callahan.
Ryan have 4 years left after this season. 7,250 in cap and 7,5 in salary for four years. That's 30 million dollars in salary.
Callahan have 2 years left with 5,8 in cap hit BUT!! He "only" have 4,7 in salary. That's 9,4 million dollar.
So what does the Sens get.. they get out of paying 20 million dollars in salary and THAT makes sense for the Sens owner.
If they buyout Callahan he'll only cost them 6,3 million over four years (altough they might keep him for next season at least).

I like Sustr and I don't think they'll trade him (because the management still have members who like the big slow stay-at-home type of D) but I'm going to here. ONLY for salary reason, I want to improve my fourth line. NJD can use some beef on their D so I'll trade him there and flip what I get.

I looked at Cullen, he's won two straight SC.
I looked at Desharnais, Rangers are selling.
I looked at Letestu, but the salary didn't fit.

The experience of winning two cups and the 1m salary, plus that he knows Kunitz from Pens, makes the difference for me in favor for Cullen.

No way Ottawa takes Callahan, their main goal is dumping Ryan’s salary. Acquiring Callahan in return would set them back to square 1, buyout or not.

With Coburn having 1 year left he’ll have no value over the summer without a contract. Since the sens aren’t trying to win this year, it’ll basically be like they never even had him if they let him go to free agency for nothing. Flipping him for a draft pick wouldn’t make sense either, they could get like a 3rd for him. Even then they won’t risk giving him a bad contract.

Erne’s window is closing. He’s been hovering between a top 9 AHL forward and fringe NHLer for 5 years now. He doesn’t have that much potential.

Cal Foote is the only decent part of the deal. A first and 2 seconds won’t cut it. It’ll take 2 firsts and a second.

It’ll take something along the lines of Sergachev and multiple picks to get Karlsson. Ottawa would not take multiple cap nightmares that they would have to buy out or flip. They would basically give Karlsson away for nothing if they did that.

What part of the "Saving 20-25m in salary" part was not clear to you? That's a LOT of money!
Adding that Coburn can have value for a high third (consider if Arizona decides to sell Hjalmarsson now, they can add Coburn for their third rounder).
Callahan is for two years (if they don't buy him out) and during those two years the team developes so it wont screw anything up.

Just because you don't understand the trade, it doesn't make it a bad trade.

What I don’t understand is why the sens would take 2 players that they would just flip/buyout anyways. The trade would essentially just be Karlsson and Ryan for Cal Foote and 3 picks, which is laughable. When struggling teams trade star players, they want youth and a plethora of picks. Not old players with bad contracts that they would have to release anyways.

Foote could be a stud and I can easily attach a condition to the 2019 2nd making it a first if the team reach SC-finals.
But what you still don't get is that the sens owner is known to be very cheap so if he get the possibility to save 20+ million dollars he'll take it.

Players to flip is valuable, they got Cole today. Erne can still become a productive middle 6 winger and gives them option to trade Smith. You have to look at a big trade like this from many angles.
