Where do I start:
1. Sparks has barely shown he is worth more than a Rosen style deal.
2. Gardiner could make around 7 on the open market on a team desperate for offense off the back end. And yes, some poor unfortunate team will probably spend that.
3. Donskoi has shown too many flashes of brilliance for him to sign under 3mill a year on that kind of term, plus there is no way the Sharks let him walk. '
4. Even though Doughty is probably kicking himself right now for the contract he signed, Toronto can not afford that kind of long term commitment on him. You dont trade cost controlled players like Kadri to make room for a player that can break your teams cap.
5. LoVerde, though a great AHL player will not be in the NHL over Rosen.
6. Mathews contract to work long term HAS to come in around JT, I know it may not but we are looking long term here.
There are a lot of short sighted decisions here, all in all I think this hurts the team, not improve it. Toronto is being built to be a dynasty that will compete for the next 5-15 years. If we take this approach we will be burnt out in only a few.
