Additional Details:
Retaining the money on Brouwer is the incentive for the Caps to send over a 2nd round pick, getting Brouwer at 2.5 makes buying him out extremely palatable, providing them a ton of cap space from this move.

Don't like any of the trades. Flames can buy-out Brouwer for significantly less, and Brodie should garner Hoffman+

You'd pay Brouwer 1.5 for 4 years as opposed to 2 for 2 years. Getting a 2nd round pick and a top end penalty killer is worth that price. No one is giving us a Hoffman+ package for Brodie, I don't think you're even close, above may be an over payment, but you are over valuing Brodie I think.

Cap Friendly doesn't have it listed but Hoffman can also play RW. He played there at the end of the year and he looked pretty good on his off wing. A left handed centre (Duchene/Monahan) could feed him one timers, which is his specialty.

No, you're paying 1.5 for 4yrs versus 7.5 & 2 in your trade. The 2nd is something, but I'm not sold on Orpik. Why does virtually every Washington version trade him? Not worth his Cap hit. Yes, many agree with you Brodie has seriously declined, and I won't argue the numbers. I just know Brodie carried the team a couple years back and believe he can do it again. I don't mind trading him as Flames have multiple good-looking prospects, but as a top-end D he is worth more than a top-end winger.
