Description

Habs take Karlsson (no extension) and Bobby Ryan's full contract for Pacioretty (no extension), Byron, Lernout and Juulsen.

With pressure off, Ottawa can then flip Pacioretty for picks and prospects either now or at the trade deadline.

Karlsson buys the Habs some time to start the season as Weber will need 20 games at least to get healthy and find his legs after a year off. Karlsson can either be re-signed or traded at the deadline.

Not sure if there's a market with NJD for a discounted Bobby Ryan (The Pride of Cherry Hills, NJ) but Ryan and a good prospect for Zacha would be good for both clubs. Ryan would be a fine complement or linemate for Taylor Hall and brings a decent amount of playoff experience. Playing Zacha with Plekanec would help Zacha develop his 200-foot game and professionalism.

Imaginative. It solves problems for each team, but if Karlsson re-signs in Montreal, there would need to be a whole lot more coming back to Ottawa.
