One more year of mediocrity coming up

Created by: deleted_x_t_213213
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 24, 2019
Published: Apr. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team just doesn't have the cap space to get out of the first round next year; I see Bracco, Sandin, Liljegren, Rosen, and perhaps Timashov being full time NHLers next year. On the way out: Gardiner (who in my mind should be converted to a forward), Zaitsev (if there's any takers; his defence is okay, but his offence has disappeared since his rookie season), Kadri (great third line centre; should fetch at least a 1st rounder and maybe more, too many antics though), and possibly Nylander, although I think he'll have a bounce back season on a line with Matthews. In 2020 they'll have close to 21 million in cap space to go after a big name free agent d man (Pietrangelo, Josi, Faulk, Barrie) which is why I stress another average season with playoff contention but nothing more. Their blueline is talented with good upside but inexperienced to take them beyond the first round. Patience... remember people we're still in the five year plan.

You're moving out the right bodies, but a couple things:

A) You won't get a 1st for Kadri. I think Dallas would be a fit though if they don't go after Duchene.
B) If it were that easy to lose Zaitsev, he'd be gone already. Nobody is paying anything to take him, we will have to pay to get rid of him.

Agree on both points, also this is the first post with a realistic Marner contract IMO. Marner is the Leafs best player.
