2019-20 Leafs

Created by: DB90
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 30, 2019
Published: Apr. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
All FA signings based on numbers from Evolving Wild (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15E1qqh3OfHvvhbv_pICfKT7VR1jJEVhWQOyKviWLN54/edit#gid=707766415)

Idea is to show that, even moving Brown and Zaitsev, and letting Gardiner and others walk, space is tight for measurably improving the roster. I feel like Dubas will keep his word to not trade Nylander (not least because it would be unwise to sell so low right now anyway). So the options are dealing one of the RFA wingers (Kapanen or Johnsson) or finding a way to be creative with the Marleau deal.

What puts this team over the cap is the Stralman signing. I think a move like this is the best way to bridge the gap until Sandin and Liljegren are ready to play real NHL minutes, and the difference that would make it possible to sign him (or a similar veteran UFA right handed d-man—he seems like the best option) is the Marleau contract.

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Brown, Connor
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Brown for Khaira was rumoured around the deadline, I think both teams circle back on it around the draft once new mgmt is in place for the Oilers. Maybe the pick should be a 2nd to make the value match—Brown for Khaira straight up seems to favour EDM, adding Bear seems to favour TOR, so the pick is trying to adjust for that.
2.
OTT
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
Taking on dead money from a team that can't afford it, putting it right on LTIR. Zaitsev's value seems to have torpedoed and I can't see how else the Leafs get someone to take this contract on. Maybe Dubas squeezes a pick out of Dorion.

The Oilers would consider that for sure.

1. There is no way Stralman should sign for that much money. He hit a steep decline this year and would probably aim to get $2M-$2.5M per year in the open market.
2. While Edmonton might accept that trade, their defense is a mess and I think they want to keep Bear
3. You're still over the cap

1. Mentioned in the explanation that all #s were based on somebody else's projections (which use aggregated data to develop a predictive model—tries to account for how these things get inflated when free agency starts).
2. They probably do, but I expect their top priority is finding a winger who can play with McDavid, and Brown has done so (in junior, but still; they're screwed if their only option is playing Draisaitl on his wing). At worst, Brown improves their forward group.
3. Also mentioned in the explanation. The purpose is to show that the Marleau deal is the biggest barrier to making any realistic moves toward improvement, rather than just treading water for a year during the window waiting for his contract to expire.
