Why would they do that? The Leafs are already in Cap hell and you want to add an expensive 6th or 7th defender? You can get a better player cheaper as an UFA. Adding a 2nd round pick would be nice but Cap space is more valuable for Toronto.
The Kings could just demote Phaneuf to the minors, have a similar Cap saving and keep their 2nd round pick
