Different trade options the Oilers could explore to creatively lower cap and get better. Next 2 years of draft picks are essentially lost but team is better and cheaper.
Toronto trade saves TO cap to resign marner, Johnson, and they get a solid, tough defensive guy with a right shot.
Carolina deal gives Carolina picks and a young player that they have interest in, especially cause they need forwards and trade away a guy whose apparently been in trade talks. Oilers get a puck moving number 1 d man however only would have 1 year on contract.
Tampa bay has offered a quality player to essentially take callahan to lower space. That deal gives Tampa lots of space and gagner only has 1 year left and can go in minors, huge savings. Oilers get a useful versaitle player in Miller.
Other deals are less likely but had less to trade. Flyers is unlikely but they xould get a prospect defenseman and pick if they dont think they can sign konecny. Pitts needs defense desperately and the Oilers may need to retain to make that deal work. Saros provides Oilers with a risky goalie who may be starter and gives nash a good young prospect forward which they need.
Next season having callahan and kassian and brodziak off the books saves cap and only nurse to resign. If Bouchard is not ready, which is likely, move him to minors, use petrovic and give person or lagesson a shot
