Mottes actually a great signing. Dont trade rust though. Make that the johnson destination. Dal needs depth defense. More the merrier. Put riikola in. Acquire gusev pay him 4 for 2 years

Needing to clear cap so you have 6M+ now for what? Either Devils or Ottawa trade would have been enough alone.

Cap space is a really valuable asset to have. This allows the Penguins to add virtually any big rental piece at the deadline

Pens would definitely need those rentals after placing Simon in 2nd line and Johnson in the roster... There's no point to make the first game roster any weaker just because it enables adding value with high price on trade deadline. What's the point on giving Hornqvist away for nothing and then using that cap space on similar rental players and losing first rounders every year in exchange?
