Because we don't want Kerfoot, or Hollowell, we want decent picks and/or impact players. Even your 3rd is a low 3rd and I don't see that pick having a ton of potential as turning into something valuable anyways. I can see an argument that Merrill might not return a 4th in this season, since he's a bottom pairing guy. We're also not going to retain on LGD. Make it LGD(no retention) and Merrill for a 3rd and a 5th and I'd take that deal. If you want us to take Kerfoot off your hands as a throw in to offset some salary, fine, we'll take him I guess, but that's a throw away to us, not an asset.

You're deal makes sense, but Hollowell is better than a fifth round pick. Besides that, Kerfoot will likely play top 6 minutes in DET. He will get more ice time and opportunity than in TOR, where he is buried beneath all the stardom. You could eventually flip Kerfoot either in the summer or next TDL. It's a save investment with decent volatility but it could work out for a team that needs as many assets as possible.

Glendening’s remaining cap is less than 700k and will be lower at TDL so retaining 50% is minimal and those 3 retention slots would be better used on larger contracts (eg Nemeth, Bernier, Helm, Flip). Hollowell has no value to Detroit as he’s a RHD that would never see ice time here as were deep at RD and Yzerman has traded away Regula to clear the logjam. Kerfoot is overpaid in the current NHL for his role as we’ve seen comparable centers like Haula sit on the market and sign for roughly half of his AAV nor does he play 2C over Fabbri even on Detroit. If you want to structure the deal without Kerfoot it would make more sense for Detroit.

I see your point. Kerfoot also plays wing, honestly more effectively than at centre because of his small size and speed up and down the ice. I see your point tho with the retention clauses. Leafs just need to save as much money as possible in ever aspect (so do most teams), and they would be willing to give up an extra asset whether its a 3rd/4th or a mid tier prospect. But valid point I understand you.
