Description
The Canucks need to maximize their assets. The most valuable asset is Tanev, and as such they should explore trade options. Tanev being a right handed D-man with a very reasonable contract and term remaining should command a very good return. The Canucks should look to acquire at least a prospect and a pick, if not more. Trading him for less makes no sense.

Toronto seems like a great fit, but their stated commitment to their 5 year plan makes a trade unlikely. Tampa and Buffalo seem like good fits as well, but I think Tanev may also appeal to Columbus. Torts values Tanev, and he would fit very well into their roster.

Edler is another asset that should be moved, but his NTC does present problems. I think Edler may waive his NTC to go to Tampa ( not a good fit ) or Carolina. Neither are hockey hotbeds, and that may appeal to him. Carolina has a need for a LD and forward, I believe they are a good matchup.

I hope Tanev is traded this off season so we can see what type of return he really nets. A lot of Canuck fans seem to be over valuing him big time in my opinion. He's a solid defensive Dman with good mobility, but he brings almost no offense and a steady stream of injuries.

I'd love to have him on the Flames as Brodie's partner on the 2nd pair, but wouldn't give up much more than the 16/17th overall in the upcoming draft.

Like I say, hopefully we find out.

The lack of higher end right handed D on the market increases his value greatly. Is he an elite D man? No. He would be a top pairing player on many teams though. The contract and term remaining just add more value. Throw in a bad contract coming back and you up the value again. A 16/17 overall is a crapshoot (especially in this draft) and on its own wouldn't make any sense. While the Canucks SHOULD trade Tanev, they can only make the deal if they get excellent value. It is a sellers market and they need to get top dollar.

A lot to give up for Columbus considering Tanev would be a second pairing.

They get will have one of the deepest D corps in the East, they get rid of a contract they have been trying to move for over a year, nothing comes off their roster, no more draft picks lost and they have the depth to make this trade. Added bonus : Tanev does not go to Tampa or Toronto.

    Columbus doesn't need Tanev.

They already have two right shot Dmen that are not only younger than Tanev, but better. Why give up two solid prosects for a $4.5 million 3rd pairing Dman (which is what he'd be on that team behind Jones and Savard)
