Matthews >>> Aho. Matthews struggled this year with 85 points in 74 games as he battled through a wrist injury, Aho had 67 points. Matthews has averaged over 50 goals per 82 games since entering the league. He has more goals in that span than anyone in the league. Matthews led NHL forwards in blocked shots. Was 8th in takeaways. I could go on.

Why would the Leafs add to Matthews and Brodie to get Aho and Pesce?

I mean if Leafs are forced to trade Auston cus he refuses to re-sign, this isnt horrible. But in such a case, Canes would be equally as unwilling to take that risk.
