Description

Pagnotta says that Capitals are trying to trade up. Montreal is rumored to be favoring Leonard and Reinbacher as their choices.

That would mean the draft order, imo, likely goes Bedard (CHI), Fantilli (ANA), Carlsson (CBJ), Smith (SJS), Leonard/Reinbacher (MTL). I don't think Arizona is in on Michkov for multiple reasons (lack of defensive prospects, relocation uncertainty playing a role on getting Michkov over from KHL).

Washington is likely trying to get ahead of Philadelphia and want to get their guy ASAP. Maybe they make the trade with Montreal to get Michkov at 5.

This was the exact price it took for the Capitals to move up two spots in the 2020 draft. Washington traded 24th overall and a 3rd round pick to Calgary for the 22nd overall pick.

I don't understand the desire to draft Michkov. If we are trying to put a good team around Ovi (as promised), waiting 3 years on a pick that could've been used to improve the team now, is irresponsible. All the defection rumors are silly as well. With the political tension around the world right now, if Michkov was to defect, it would start a firestorm.

even in this draft the thinking is that your pick likely doesn't help you for 2 or 3 years anyways. look at the 21 draft for example -- the only real contributors even for this season were Beniers, Power, McTavish, and Johnson. also, the caps have a ton of experience bringing russian players over before their contracts are up
