Detroit is a bad hockey team and accomplishes a couple of things with these two trades.
1. The most important is clearing up space to resign the RFA's.
-Mantha, Larkin, and AA will all need a raise after this year. They don't have the space as long as the bad contracts sit on the books.
- Nyquist is one of the few acceptable contracts which makes his easy to trade in terms of cap hit and length.
2. Provides additional draft picks for Detroit to use to refill the prospect pool.
3. Opens a top 6 wing position for Svechnikov to fill. If you ask me Scevhnikov has to play 20 games in the NHL this year so he can start getting comfortable in the league.
4. Let's the young kids play in positions appropriate for their skills. Larkin as a 2C, Mantha and Svechnikov as top 6 wingers, and Bertuzzi as a 4th line wing.
5. I would love to move a goalie, but until goalie situations around the league sort themselves out I won't even try to put a trade together.
