I wouldn’t trade Guentzel or Rust, especially if you’re only replacing them with Killorn & Lafreniere. You can get Lafreniere for just a 1st.

I feel TOR needs to stay away from guys like Mikheyev & Kapanen who are weak puck transporters & puck handlers. We need guys who can settle the puck down and make decisions more coherently, since none of Engvall, Kerfoot, Jarnkrok or Holl can achieve that.

It’s crazy how most drafts produce very few elite players, and even those elite players will only be elite for 2-3 seasons. Being a superstar for multiple seasons is very hard.

My point is NYR need to determine their identity. If the goal is to be a dump & chase team, they should trade Lafreniere & Chytil and make their bottom 6 mostly Vesey/Goodrow/Hunt types. But if they want to keep Laf/Chytil and develop them it is better to go for players with more potential.

Yes but they are not players who you want to keep long term when building a contender. Very replaceable players.

Yes but it doesn’t really help to still have guys like Merfoot/Jarnkrok/Engvall/Holl on the team when they are replaceable in Keefe’s system. But we are stuck with them at least most are UFA.

Boldy is obv better but it raised the market for all young productive forwards in general. I had Chytil getting that initially but now I think the price is about $1M more AAV.
This is also too cap constrained. No team is going to deploy a roster that can’t fit 23 players within the salary cap like this one does.</div></div>
I think NYR needs to trade Trouba & Goodrow, also they may need a coach who is a little more open to new ideas & teaching methods. He can’t surround the young guys with fourth line quality teammates like Rooney, Reaves, Vesey, Hunt, Brodzinski & Carpenter every year. Pick up some younger high end talent that are reclaim projects and develop them.

IMO the main problem with Gallant is that he isn’t open to changing his tactics & developing young players as a project. He is insistent on this dump & chase system and takes on replacement level talent like Hunt/Blais/Brodzinski/Harpur/Tinordi/Reaves/Rooney/Vesey to compliment Laf/Kakko.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Yeah, I think he can really benefit from being on a rebuilding team instead, however, if NYR is willing to be patient with him then perhaps by next year he will have broken out.
The way he's used seems to be effective as a net front-presence but if he's not effective enough on the forecheck and winning puck battles and not carrying the puck occasionally on the rush, his point totals are going to be lacking for sure. So, it might just be that his role is too limited in their system and that he needs to elevate his game in certain aspects.</div></div>
For sure. Honestly I think the whole NYR forward group suffers from too much over coaching. Like there’s no room for creativity at 5v5, ever since Gallant took over Panarin’s impact at 5v5 has plummeted, no one has been able to maintain a forecheck this season and the transition game has been awful. They just cycle back to the D and crash for rebounds every play.

-Both sides decline - this is too much for the Leafs to give up and way too much for the Canucks to retain.
-Ilya Samsonov's put up a .924 SV%/2.09 GAA. There's no world where you should be trading someone performing at that level for a Max Domi. If you really want him, give up something like a 3rd and an Alex Steeves-level prospect, not your 1B goalie, and especially not when your 1A is the man most synonymous with "oft-injured" these days, Matt Murray.
-Somehow this is the worst - a legit 4th/5th D who's been giving you a pretty solid 18 minutes a night (and holding his own at 20+ minutes the last couple weeks) for a guy who can't get off the 4th line on a lottery team? What is this even?</div></div>
It’s funny how all of my posts get taken down but this stuff is allowed.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I haven't really watched him at all but from what I heard about him from around the draft, it sounded to me like he does have star potential but he won't be a superstar. Although I don't think New York is the place for a prospect to develop. He doesn't score much but sometimes he does show flashes of his talent when he does.
I'll admit there are a lot of empty net tap-ins/dirty goals but maybe he just needs a setup man (no offense to Panarin) that makes that easy for him, like McDavid did for Draisaitl in the past. You might want to skip to the last half of the video since most of the goals are near identical. I think he has what it takes to at least be the next JVR.
<div class="yt_out_cont"><div class="yt_cont"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8ZcP4i6ZAsM" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div></div></div>
Yeah I see JVR and Hall as comparables in terms of player profile, but Lafreniere’s gotta be a lot more effective off the rush and on the forecheck. He makes a lot of controlled zone entries but no setup. He racks up a lot of hits but can’t win ozone time. A part of me wonders if it’s the system, something doesn’t work in the setup for him to be effective.

For me Lafreniere was not a star and never will be. I watched him a lot in junior and he never had the physical attributes that stood out. It was all about deception for him, can only take you so far.

Genuinely feel we’re at a point in producing less prominent young talent than USA. If Bedard and Wright become blue chips, then obviously we’re clear but McDavid, MacKinnon, Bedard, Wright versus Matthews, Hughes, Thompson, Eichel is a crazy matchup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CalvinKlein</b></div><div>Laf and Kaako don't seem to be progressing. Are they getting enough ice time or are they struggling?</div></div>
The problem is not just those players struggling. They don’t get PP time but are actually scoring at the similar rate at 5v5 compared to Panarin. The offensive-zone system doesn’t work for their players. It’s too much dump + chase, crash the net and no one is really able to hold onto the puck & create.

Both players didn't play alot of PP. Both got little top 6 time, mostly 3rd line time. Both have similar stats on their first 3 seasons (Dach was hurt most of 2nd season)
2023 is a better draft. I think a 1st between 10 and 15 would be enough for Lafreniere. Could be a nice piece for their future rebuild in 3 years.
NYR will be in a cap crunch next summer, especially if they try to sign Kane. Could see them trade Laffy or Kakko if they ask for too much money.</div></div>
For sure a top 15 pick is fair for Laf. But he would be a good pickup unlike what you think.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LIRIK</b></div><div>I mean, that's what Patrick Kane said. You can go argue with him it you want. Here's exactly what he said :
"It's tough coming into the league at 18-19 as the third overall pick. The expectations are high. When you're playing on a fourth line, you don't play as much as you should. He showed a lot of potential but was in a tough role." - Patrick Kane
"We are happy for him. He's played in difficult situations on the third and fourth lines here. Every time he's been used in offensive situations, he's had some success. I loved playing with him; he was able to create space for me" - Patrick Kane.
You still think he played 2 full seasons centering Kane and DeBrincat? I hope you're not a BlackHawks fan, that would be hilarious.</div></div>
He started both of the past 2 seasons with Kane-DeBrincat but got bumped off for Suter and Strome. And honestly both Strome & Suter put up better numbers than him on the top line.
We’re not comparing who’s better right now, at the time of trade, Lafreniere was better than Dach in CHI. Laf scored 19 5v5 goals with Goodrow + Gauthier.

NYR - If they Drafted better
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Is the problem bad drafting or bad development? If Stutzle and Lafreniere switched places, or Kakko and Zegras, or Kravtsov and Farabee…would they be doing as well in NY?</div></div>
Coaching is part of the problem. Gallant and Quinn are both coaches who specialize in building forecheck systems around grinders rather than skilled power forwards. Lafreniere is a physical + smart player but he isn’t fast or skillful, in the right system he should be effective similarly to JT/RNH.

Dach have better playoffs stats than Lafreniere, and he's having a better start so far this season.
I'd take Dach over Lafreniere. PPG players like him are difficult to find.</div></div>
That’s not true, Dach played 2 full seasons centering Kane + DeBrincat. And most of his points came on the PP.
