I explained in the notes section that by dropping Robertson down in the beginning of the season we would be cap compliant, at least until injuries create more cap space

I HATE MY FANBASE
Why so emotional? I never understood why people get upset with fun trade ideas that others post on this site. This site is meant for that… exploring fantasy trades. The only reason why Brodie and Nylander are always a part of fantasy trades is bc trading them frees up cap to get a decent player back or make multiple other trades to make things fun. Instead of a lacklustre Lafferty trade.

Leafs are paying a 2nd as they are retaining a little more. Canes get a better player for a 3rd as they also gain just 1.5mil of cap. Obviously this trade won’t happen but it would defiantly be interesting if teams did a trade similar to this where there is retention by a third party and similar players are being traded.

Obviously you misunderstood the trade. Both the canes and the leafs have a third team retain 50% of the cap making both teams gain more cap space all while getting back a fairly similar dman. Age has nothing to with anything when both players will not be resigning with their current teams.

I said in the notes that the canes won’t be retaining salary on Pesce. The leafs and canes will pay other teams to retain salary making this trade ideal for both teams as they both gain cap relief without losing much. They both get back a similar player to the one they trade away for half the cap.

You’re not paying Pesce. In this trade the leafs and canes gain cap as they use third teams to retain salary

Carolina has Slavin, Orlov and Skjei who are all better than Brodie. They take on more salary, the older player, the worse player... easily decline. ESPECIALLY if you want retention</div></div>
Brodie is a better defensman than Pesce is and he’s a better offensive defensman than Pesce is. Ridiculous to think otherwise.

TK and Briere worked together extensively last summer to improve TK’s game and then he had a break out year. Briere doesn’t need to move him and they have a great relationship and TK loves Philly and will probably where a letter soon so he’s in no rush to move him and I’m sure would love to re-sign him even. If you don’t meet is high asking price he won’t move him and this deal isn’t close to that high asking price.</div></div>

I don’t see him going for more than 2 picks (1st and 2nd or 3rd) and two prospects. Unless you’re implying that you would like to see a young stud coming back. A young stud like Jarvis, Knies would be a trade chip 5 years ago but now teams hold onto their RFAs that are able to crack the line up due to being cap strapped. Konecny is getting picks and prospects that have not cracked an NHL roster yet

And put them over the cap!
LA doesn't have the luxury to be interested in Nylander. They are likely going to need a goalie, so if they make maneuvers it's probably to add a goalie during the year. If they do need help in their top 6, they are probably looking at the rental market and weakening their D-core to do it by giving up Roy.
Woll isn't waivers exempt, so the Leafs probably lose him. If they need help in net, they are going to acquire someone who is doing well during the year and carry 3 goalies. Right now, there's no reason to think that Lankinen is going to do any better than Samsonov next season especially considering he's a backup goalie. They might sign a guy like Eliott that they can pass through waivers as insurance during the offseason.</div></div>
Love the lyrical response 😆
And yeah, the Kings are cap strapped too. Doesn’t mean they can’t make other moves themselves. Though, you’re absolutely right that should address their goalie situation.

We are all making trades that would not come to fruition. This particular trade is only IF the Kings were to to sign and trade for Nylander. That’s what I would try to get if Nylander had to go. I think La would be interested.
The leafs could use another goalie just in case. Woll and Samsonov both played well last year but what if that changes. Having 3 goalies is not such a bad thing.

I know but I’m sure that’s who LA will give up. It’s risky on the Leafs’ end. I just don’t see LA giving up a better prospect.

Unfortunately, that’s not how you use the LTIR. Teams can only put players on LTIR after the season starts. To be Compliant the team must have all Rostered players and injured players accounted for under the cap. This is why the Toronto Maple Leafs are $8 million over the cap because Jake Muzzin‘s contract is accounted for.
