Kerfoot >> Roslovic, and Roslovic will be in the same spot after this season as an RFA demanding similar money. Leafs decline.

If I'm being honest I do believe Marner is probably worth 10+, but that just won't work man. If the leafs give him that then they reaaaallyy mess up. I still believe not even Matthews should have been given that much on his first contract. Why not give him Eichel money and give Marner the same thing? I don't really get it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hanson493</b></div><div>As an aside, Aho would make more money in endorsement in Montreal than in Carolina right? makes sense for him to sign a lower offersheet than he might get from say a nashville or a carolina. Aho also becomes a free agent at the end of his deal and would immediately get paid more money. in 5 years. why wouldnt he sign that? Marner has nothing to lose. He is already the highest scorer on the team two years running. He might be a wing but he does it all. if you take kucherovs 9.5 mill and discount it even a little bit but then adjust for income tax as i stated earlier that deal becomes 10.5+ in a taxable market.</div></div>
I dont think a single person on this Earth believed that the Canes wouldn't match that offer. Also, if you're going to adjust for income tax you need to adjust for the hockey market. Hockey is probably the fourth or fifth most popular professional sport in Florida, as you can tell by attendance (Panthers had an empty stadium all year, Tampa had fans out of nowhere because they were dominant last season). Marner easily makes up that same 2M difference in brand deals. He gets between 9 and 10.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hanson493</b></div><div>if kucherov is a comparable, than tavares and matthews have to be as well. Did you know matthews has only gotten to 73 points as his HIGHEST scoring year. And thats fine, Ahos contract is what it is, but it isnt officially a deal yet until carolina matches or declines to match. Marner has 27 more points over his career playing 1 less game. had 13 more points this year as well.</div></div>
Marner is the only winger out of those 4. Centers get paid more, for the longest time it has been that way. Marner is playing with a much better finisher in Tavares than Aho who played with Justin Williams and Nino. Marner's highest goal total is 26, so you know a lot of points are from Tavares finishing. Matthews has been plagued with injury in the last 2 seasons, his goal total was always on pace to surpass his 40-goal rookie season (and he just had 73 points, 37 goals in 68 GAME, you need to think about what he was on pace for). He is a pure sniper that will hit 50 in multiple seasons. Also just announced that Canes will match and Aho will get $8.4M over 5.

Actually, that is Aho's contract no matter what, he signed it. Whether it is with the Canes or the Canadiens, his contract is guaranteed to be $8.4M x 5 years. Kucherov signed his contract after a 100 point season (a number Marner has still yet to eclipse). Regardless, his $9.5M number is still a comparable, but I agree with the income tax situation. Additionally, though, Toronto, as a huge hockey market, gives Marner much much more in endorsements and brand deals (beats, true, apple, intact), so that money lost in contract value is immediately made up for. If Marner was getting 10.5-11, he would have been signed by now, just as Matthews was. He is not getting 10.5 or 11M, period.

Kerfoot had the same amount of points as Kadri and is still great defensively. Kadri's minutes dropped off behind Matthews and Tavares, he was not as effective. With Spezza, the Leafs' center depth becomes Matthews-Tavares-Kerfoot-Spezza, which is JUST as good. Marner will get paid, that is not even a question, he'll sign in the 9-9.8M range. The top 4 D has dramatically improved, the Leafs had HAINSEY as a 1RD last season. Chara, Bergeron, Marchand, Krejci aren't getting any younger or better lmao.

An overabundance of RD = trading for assets. Bracco can instantly play in their Top 9. Two second round picks can be flipped for other roster players, used to trade up in drafts or simply trust scouts and get great talent. Carolina has a lot to gain from this trade, period.
