Why would the Pens do this?
Not paying to move Petry, he's probably worth at least a mid round pick somewhere
If they want to clear cap there are other ways to do it

Ducks Swap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pens1991</b></div><div>No sure that third would come back, but I don't think this is a terrible deal. The only thing is i'm not sure what the ducks plans are on backup this year, if they'll bring in someone in their system. Rutta is a serviceable 3rd pair player. They would add about another $1.6M to their cap, but Henrique retention and DeSmith fall off next summer. They could always flip Rutta at the deadline as well.
Ducks fans on ACGM have recently seemed to think they'll wait to deal him at the deadline as it may bring a bigger return which I could see.</div></div>
That's an overpay on Henrique, they won't see more than a 1st for him at the deadline
The other half of the deal is Rutta + DeSmith for a 3rd, which is also a slight overpay to balance the deal

So why would the Ducks put themselves on the hook for a 1.8M backup that they have no use for. "You can do X, Y or Z with DeSmith". No, we'll just not spends assets to get him in the first place.
If you want a 3rd for Rutta then the Ducks pass. He's your cap problem not ours at this point in time. And yes, that means our d-corp will be terrible again but they don't call it a rebuild for no reason.</div></div>
He's not a cap problem, he's a spare piece, there's a difference
Can make it a 4th/5th whatever if you want but I'm not going to argue value too much on a mid round pick
I don't see how depth hurts Anaheim, most teams have 5+ goalies now, Pens have 6+ at the moment. Flexibility (especially at goalie) has value

Oh the 4th line will definitely be buried with dzone starts haha. And it should be solid. The thing I'm worried about is how the 3rd line would handle those dzone starts. I'm just trying to go based on Sullivan's recent deployment. If he decides to do a 180 and give the 3rd line more ozone starts then I wouldn't have a big problem with Kessel being down there with Granlund.</div></div>
I have a higher opinion of O'Connor than most, think he makes up for a lot of what those two lack
& Granlund I think improves with better deployment/linemates, he's been average defensively most of his career

Gives Dostal more time to play in the AHL, which can't hurt. If he's 100% ready and needs NHL time midseason, can probably move DeSmith for a pick somewhere rounds 3-5 to a team that needs a solid backup. Or just waive him, they have the space and/or let a team grab him off waivers for free
I value Rutta at a 3rd-4th on his own, wouldn't move him for a 5th

And I wouldn't want Kessel if he's playing bottom 6 - especially if it's with Granlund. No defense there. And they're going to get heavy dzone starts. I just don't like that combination. To each their own I guess.
I think Rust will have a good year as well - he really just had a down shooting year that's all. But that's why I think he's a move down candidate - to give the lines better depth. Not necessarily as a punishment for bad play - but to make the 3rd line actually decent</div></div>
I think Rust with Malkin > Kessel with Malkin
I would bury that 4th line with D-zone starts as it would be solid, they probably end up playing more minutes than the proposed 3rd line

Kessel doesn't fit great with 87/71 outside of the PP, better to give him his own line with a passer like Granlund and forechecker like O'Connor

“No room to add more”
You may want to reexamine that bottom 6, Granlund had a significantly more productive season than “additions” like Foligno and Perry
You can just say you don’t want him on your favorite team, it’s ok, we don’t have to go back and forth on it to as though there’s an issue there on value

DeSmith may be a positive asset to someone, but he is not to the Hawks.</div></div>
A conditional 2025 1st =/= a 2024 1st
Not to mention the differences between Calgary and Pittsburgh’s situations with the cap and respective players
It’s ok if you don’t want Granlund, we don’t have to nitpick on the value between a 1st and 2nd, it’s not that deep
Just kind of seems like a no brainer for Chicago to weaponize their cap

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>klassic</b></div><div>Sure we can disagree, but I don't see the logic in a rebuilding team filling their roster with veterans leaving no play for young players and prospects to get opportunities. The simple logic here is there is a cost to move the amount of money Granlund will be paid, and that cost is more than a 2nd round pick. Supply and demand. You have supply, but there is no demand from the Hawks at this point.</div></div>
The counter would be that the Hawks actually have the supply in the form of cap space, but the demand is just not that high at this point
Why would the Pens pay a 1st to dump a player they can buyout at a minimal cost?
I think the addition of a player like Hall goes against your narrative, Chicago clearly doesn't want to be vying for the first pick again
They could also retain & move Granlund, they don't have to keep him if prospects are knocking at the door (but they do not seem to be)
Just think it makes sense for both sides

We don't need Granlund to get to the floor. We are there with plenty of overage. We don't need Granlund, we don't need DeSmith. You want to dump salary then you are gonna have to pay for it. 2 years $5M AAV ($11m actual cash) is gonna cost more than a 2nd and a goalie that we don't need. It's pretty simple.</div></div>
We can disagree, and GMs aren't always truthful
Simple logic says if you have the chance to make your team better/deeper and get paid for the privilege you would
Especially if those assets can be flipped deadline time for even more value

The premium is the 2nd
Don't think he's worth a 1st to dump, he's a net positive against Chicago's existing bottom 6 and the cap space is negligible when they have 17M to spare
The buyout would also only be 6M over four years if Chicago wants to go that road, which in my opinion = a 2nd, not a 1st
Also they can in theory flip him for even more value
