Understood, appreciate the insight. Wasn't sure if no salary retention would keep the top prospects out of the equation.

Soooo what now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>I said I wanted a long term deal, Lou is arguably the worst GM in the NHL so you can’t expect him to be forward thinking. He’d rather give long term term deals to 4th line scrubs.
You can’t say Dobson wouldn’t accept at all costs. There was a number that could have bought UFA years. That number likely would start with a 7.</div></div>
Use some logic here...
Let's say they did a 8yearsx7mill instead. That's 56 mill total and he's a UFA at 30 years old. Meaning he's made 56 mill for a majority of his career and now at the tail end, maybe signing a 5-7 year deal around the same. Career totals to 112mill (being generous) and he bounced around from at least three different teams for deals
With the current deal, 3yearsx4mill 12mill total. If he plays really well and nails a 9mill deal next contract when he's 25, sign in for 8 years then it's a 72mill deal. He'll be 33. Get's lucky and signs a 3-5 year deal (let's say 5) at 5 to 7 mill (let's say 5), that's 25mill. Career totals to 109 (being conservative) while being on the same team, maybe 2.
So even with the conservative math, it's nearly a wash going the safe route. It's something both party's agree to because of this. 3 years at 4 mill is an amazing deal especially since they still retain his rights in his prime. Lou basically guaranteed we have a cost controlled Dobson in his prime and beyond. If you like Dobson that much you should be happy.
Also, that awful GM will be in the HOF. What hall is your name in?

Ben Islanders pt 5
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>Aho and Holmstrom aren't worth much, if anything. If this is a deadline move that means the NYI's are in the playoffs, which would put that pick in a mid-late draft position. I won't say that Bailey is 100% a cap dump at the deadline, but right now it is looking that way. Regardless, Bailey isn't worth anything to CHI, specifically, because of their status as a rebuilding team. And you want almost 50% retention. Which if you are taking up one of CHI's retention slots, you might as well just utilize the whole 50%, because I think the retention slot itself is probably worth more than the actual amount retained, at this point. CHI will want a top prospect and a 1st. This isn't that. CHI declines.</div></div>
I agree, I saw this ACGM and the underpayment was my first thought. As a CHI fan, is there a specific isles prospect you have in mind?
Would something like this work?:
-bailey
-1st
-buldoc/wilde
Unfortunately, the isles only top prospects are Raty and Dufour and they can't give one of them up for 1 year of Kane. Would a roster player like Beauviller be good instead? Then CHI doesn't retain?

You've been pushing this long term deal narrative for weeks now. It doesn't work like that, multiple people have explained to you that it's in both the team and player's best interest to sign up until RFA status is over. Everyone told you it would be three years, you didn't listen, and you were wrong like everyone expected.
Neither party would agree to it as 3 years is the safest bet for everyone. You're argument is penny pinching. The NHL isn't built to plan out for the next 5 years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>A lot of smart teams look to give their emerging stars long term deals. If Dobson gets 3-4 years now, it will cost in the 8-9 mill range to sign him long term on his next deal.
This is a better option than trading/ overpaying for a declining veteran.</div></div>
This isn't true at all. By this logic you're paying for future play that may never happen. What if he never puts up 50 points again?
It gives teams security to retain him so he's an RFA again ont he next deal while seeing his real talent at his prime. It also allows Dobson to make th emost amount of money. Neither side would accept that deal

It's in both the player and team's best interest to make it a 4 year deal. Understand how the game works.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>The isles window Is definitely closed, this team is way too old to compete - the game is getting younger and this teams average age is pushing 30.
Lets look at the last 4 lamoriello teams with an average age of around 30 YO
21-22 Isles: Missed the playoffs
14-15 NJD: Missed the playoffs
13-14 NJD: Missed the playoffs
12-13 NJD : Missed the playoffs
The narrative that Wahlstrom won't have an impact for another few years is an ancient way of thinking . A forwards prime years are usually from 22-27 YO. He ranks 3rd among all isles forwards in goals per 60 min over the past 2 seasons.
Tarasenko is old and he's coming off a season where he played with two elite players who are much better than him (Thomas and Buchnevich). He will struggle to hit 30 goals next season. The best thing for the isles is to fail miserably next season and miss the playoffs by 20 pts because then there's a higher change the team sees extreme change. I want to see guys like Bailey, Pageau, Lee, Palmieri continue to regress because this team needs a major change in philosophy. This is a young mans game and a team constructed like this doesn't deserve to be successful.</div></div>
Tarasenko will put up more points than wahlstrom next season, even possibly the season after. But that's arguing nothing.
Again you're proving my point we disagree on the window. lamoriello's over 30 teams history are irrelevant because it has nothing to do with the players themselves - just the team of that time. I would also note that the average last season was heavily skewed by chara and greene, but I digress
We will fundamentally disagree because we don't agree on the window. Good chatting with you, have a nice day.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>Not at all - successful teams don't constantly throw away 1st rd picks for players at or on the wrong side of 30. Tarasenko is getting old and he played with two elite talents last season which boosted his point totals. The Isles aren't close to being contenders, so this trade just sends them into hockey purgatory.
There is a high chance all of Tarasenko, Nelson, Lee, Pageau, Bailey, and Palmieri regress next season,. Thats usually what happens once a player hits 31,32 YO. Adding another 30+ YO at the expense of giving up wahlstrom and a 1st rd pick in the deepest draft since 2015 is absurd. I don't think a team with 10 of it's 12 forwards 30 or older has made the playoffs in the last 5 years.</div></div>
So you're basically saying isles window is closed and they should pack it in? That's the absurd part.
Whalstrom, holmstrom, that first won't have an impact for another few years. Bode might never make an impact unless he's on a team that tolerates vaxx status.
There is no agreeing here, we're of two different mindsets. My mindset is capitalize on the open window and sacrifice the future. You're mindset is cut the losses and focus on the future. Sorry, but I've been watching this team for too long do that strategy, I'd rather give up future talent for a 40 goal guy, no matter his age,

Bit of an overreaction no?
The only roster talent given up is Whalstrom. Everything else stays the same. How would that team miss the playoffs?

The pasta and cat are probably too low. To be honest, I don't think isles even have the pieces to offer to acquire either of them without destroying the current lineup.
What are the isles top trade pieces without destroying the current lineup untochables (barzy, pelech, dobson, ilya)? I'd say the 1st rounder, whally, and raty. Would those three get pasta? I don't think so but I would trade them for him.

Ranger fans are so fair-weather it's insane. You're winning and a player is playing well "best team on earth, best players on earth, no question". Go down a series and suddenly everyone is trash. I guess that's what happens when the fans only watch if they're playoff bound.
