Description
The expension draft rules would put the Habs in a position of strength. As it stands, their protection list would include non core players such as Andrighetto, Hudon, DLR or Barberio. On the flip side, many teams will have trouble protecting assets, and the likes of Fowler, Spurgeon, Ellis, Severson, DeHaan or Savard could very likely be available. Clearly, proven top-4 young d-men will be shopping at bargain price soon. IMO, MB should target one of these to replace Markov - my choice would be Ekholm. NSH fans can challenge the return, truth is they will have to expose Jarnkrok, Weber, Ellis or Ekholm. In the context, a 2nd rounder would be a fair compensation.

He obviously should also sign a good scoring winger. Stamkos is out of the question; he wants to play center and would summon cap hell on the team for years. Okposo is a better fit; he's an offensive-generating RW and one of the youngest UFA available. If it turns out that he's a stud away from Tavares, give him Eller's spot on the protection list. The opening night roster for 2017-18 would then boast a top-tier D and the ingredients to build 3 balanced scoring lines, while nothing much would have been shed in the process. What do you think?

I like the team, hopefully you'd be right about Ekholm. Someone else might offer more. This team looks competitive though, a free agent like Okposo could turn a dismal offseason into an excellent one.

That's the thing: there would be lots of d-men available, and not much takers. Remember, you'd have to protect no more than 4 forwards to protect 4 d-men. Teams with deep rosters would not risk loosing a good prospect or top line player for added D depth. That would leave, I think, 4 takers: ARI, CAR, EDM and TOR. On the sellers side, there would be at least 6 teams: ANA, CBJ, NSH, MIN, NJD and NYI. If Ekholm is not available, then Spurgeon, Scandella, Savard, J.Johnson or DeHaan would. Interrestingly enough, just like that, the Habs sub-par top-6 would be an advantage.
