Trying to find extra cap space

The Canucks take on 1 more year of Martin Hanzel, who missed most of last season and doesn't look like he'll play much next year. In exchange they get a fairly old prospect, who is more of a project as this point. However, Honka is a RHD and could fill a role with the Canucks. They also get a late pick

The Stars get Sutter for 2 more years, with salary retained. Sutter could still fill a 4th line role or 3rd line role in case of injury. The Stars are clearly making a push for the cup and Sutter provides flexibility while being cheaper. The Stars also get a higher pick and a decent defensive prospect to replace Honka in their system.

Trade with almost any team, Canucks should try to get a pick, but more importantly create space for younger options on the back end.

Possible depth option

Canucks take on 1 more year of Scandella, who likely doesn't have a spot with Buffalo any longer. They receive a older, relatively unproven center prospect. Center is one area in which the Canucks prospect pool is fairly weak. The Canucks also receive a pick.

The Sabres get a 4th line guy in Schaller, who scored 12 goals two seasons ago in the same division for the Bruins. They also get 2 more years of Baertschi who is a serviceable middle six forward that can add some more skill in the Sabers line-up
