So.......

PK Subban + 10th OVR for RNH + 4th OVR + 2018 2nd

I mean, value wise, it's pretty fair. Subban's contract is rough, but EDM has the space right now, and I'm sure they'll find ways to make it work down the road.

From an outside perspective (yes, I know...Bruins fan, could potentially have a biased opinion against the Habs) but I don't see this trade being bad for either team. Could Subban bring a little more value? yeah, but you need to take into consideration that contract. It does hurt him.

I honestly would hate to see Subban off the Canadiens. I love hating him there. He is an awesome player, awesome person off the ice, but he is such a douche on the ice, and is a perfect Hab.

Best realistic offer so far, Mtl gets Hopkins and Dubois, so they can shop Plekanec,Eller and Desharnais. Nice 1-2-3 center with Nugent-Hopkins,Galchenyuk and Dubois.

*9th overall* not 10th. (Small detail i know)

I think people are getting a little too hooked on the 9M/per. You have to understand that it looks like quite a bit now but down the line it won't be as bad as you think. Look at it this way:

Karlsson, Doughty, Ekman-Larsson, Hedman will all command (based on trends of salaries, etc) at least 9M-13M in their next contracts. By the time Subban is midway through his contract, other teams stud dmen will be priced way higher than PK's. PK's contract set a precedence for future contracts of similar status.

Guys like Burns, Shattenkirk, Carlson, McDonagh will all command north of 7-9M in their next contracts. While a guy like Burns can be argued is "better than Subban", he's also 4-5 years older. Shattenkirk/Carlson/McDonagh are all good dmen also but have not put up nearly as good numbers offensively and/or have not won a Norris.

Subban is paid what a player of his calibre and statistics is worth in the NHL right now. Its the others who are providing more than their contract dictates. On a year to year basis, Karlsson should already be at 9-10M and so should Doughty but their teams signed them early enough before they reached that potential.

I get it, everyone hates Subban and his contract so he's become something of lightning rod for criticism but the guy is legit. Don't let the rumor mill speculation about his cockiness or loudness sway your thoughts of him. The team itself had a lot more to do with that then the media leads on. Subban got the attention (Good and bad) because of his contract and expectation when others were just as much if not more to blame. Only a few dmen in the league are as good/better and have done what he's done. Those few players will all command 10M+ in their next contracts based off what Subban got.

Considering a RH top 2 Dman is the most in demand position currently, his value has increased without him specifically doing anything. He alone with the current group of players in Edmonton can make them a playoff team. With Subban, guys like Fayne only play 10 mins a game like he should. Younger guys like Reinhart, Nurse, Davidson and even Klefbom aren't exposed to the best players on the other side each night giving them more confidence to perform to their capabilities without being exposed to their weaknesses that are still in development.

Given the players already slotted into positions in Edmonton, they need to start turning these extra assets into ready right now superstars to complement their already good players like McDavid, Eberle and Hall etc.
