Is it perfect? Nope.... I can see plenty of negative comments coming towards the way of this defense. "Colin Miller on the 1st pairing?! Who's Rob O'Gara?!" Oh well... Feed me with your hate, people! That defense would be fun. My main points:
1.) Colin Miller on the first pairing. Is it ideal? No, but you know what... Time to really see what he's got. For one, Chara has played with worse partners...Trotman being the #1 man in that regard...Back on track, He (Colin) is going on 25 years old, and is done developing at the AHL level. He has some all around potential. Excellent skater, good offensive head, isn't afraid to play physical. Is he great defensively? No..... But that could come with actually getting playing time. This plan could go one or two ways.. Colin Miller comes in and proves to be, at least, a top 4 defenseman, or he fails in that spot, and you have to go a different direction. Well, acquiring Trouba helps that. Trouba is a legit top 4 defenseman. He's 22 years old, and just reached the 200 game mark. He's shown two way ability, and is solid defensively. You can easily slide him up into Miller's spot, send Colin down, make him the #7, or trade him.
2.) If Colin does fail, and you have to move up Trouba, call up Brandon Carlo and slot him right next to Krug (that right there should be a beast pairing down the road. Carlo would compliment Krug's game to a "T") or the least favorite option would be to slide Kevan up to #4 and play Carlo right next to O'Gara (or Morrow...Or maybe they go the F/A route and sign a John Merrill -- who i would love as a low risk, high reward signing). Nonetheless, This defense, can transition the puck, and it has a nice influx of younger players on it with Colin and O'Gara (or Morrow).
Offensively. Team has some fire power. Offense wasn't the issue last season, and adding Backes (as long as the term and money is fair) would be a nice fit on this team. Resigning Stempniak to hold down the fort until someone like Senyshyn is ready. Plenty of cap space to play with as well if the team is in a good spot for the playoffs, but is missing something.
