Description
KEY ASSUMPTIONS:
Habs can break the bank to get Pietrangelo.
By 2021-22, Caufield, Podkolzin, Hoglander and whoever was drafted in the top 10 in the June 2020 draft should be in a position to challenge for roles on the NHL club.
Crawford (or Halak) would be willing to "come home" to Montreal for a 1- or 2-year contract, resting Price 25 games per year and giving Primeau the time to develop properly.

RATIONALE:
Use the cap space Habs have stored up -- as well as two very good players -- to get 3 excellent prospects from Vancouver. Deal would immediately move the Canucks into Stanley Cup Finals contention;
Add Turris and a top prospect from Nashville by saving them cap and term that they can't afford, as well as Tatar, who gives the Preds a lot of immediate offence and versatility for a run at the playoffs. Turris gives the Habs a solid RW who can double as a centre when needed -- the kind of depth they lacked this season;
Acquire picks for Thompson, Weal and Kovalchuk;
Re-sign Kovalchuk in the off season.

NOTES:
In the summer of 2021, Thompson and Kovalchuk's contracts expire and Eriksson would either be traded or bought out, freeing up sufficient cap space to offer extensions/raises to Danault, Gallagher and Kotkeniemi.

Even if Turris has a good year, he would likely be left unprotected for Seattle to select.

    Not married to the Oilers or the pick, but for argument's sake, what if the Habs tossed in a 4th as a sweetener?

    Oilers pass for sure. Kovalchuk hasn’t had a point in his last 6 games.

    Noted, though he was being used like a sled dog in the 10 games prior and is still a +3 player on a 50-point pace. Given third-line minutes and PP time, you'd get a lot more efficient scoring from him. But as I said above, this was more about getting something in the short term and then trying to re-sign him in July for another year. I wouldn't do that if I didn't think that with some smart load management, he'd still be a useful offensive player.
