Description
Brodie: Slight overpay, but 3 year deal is perfect for Samuelsson and Johnson to develop. Great analytics and great defensively
Hutton is a concern but I couldn't bring in another goalie and stay under the cap. This is assuming no cap increase and no CBO

I'm targeting Stastny or Pavelski at 2C for the Sabres and I would overpay for both. Great analytics, playoff experience, still producing, and have less than 2 years on their deals.

Potentially an overpay but I think Vegas takes this deal. We need a veteran 2 way 2C to groom Cozens and get Skinner going again

Massive overpay for Stastny. I'd only offer Borgen or the 2nd, certainly not Pekar. If you want Skinner to score 40 goals again, he needs to play with Eichel, Reinhart or Olofsson can produce without Jack. Rather would trade for Tierney or Stepan than Stastny. Tierney would be the perfect option imo

It would be difficult to pry Stastny away from Vegas, so I wanted to potentially offer them something they can't refuse, but yes I wouldn't want to get rid of Pekar. I really think Skinner could produce on a line with Stastny/Pavelski and Cozens. Tierney is more of a 3C and is looking for probably a longer term deal and I don't think it would uptick Skinner's production enough with him. Stepan I think is falling off and is more of an overpaid 3C as well.

What do you think of the Brodie signing?

Tierney would be fine as a 2nd line center until Cozens is ready. he puts up an easy 40 points on the 2nd worst team in the league. Stepan is overpaid but only 1 year and is a great vet. Brodie is not what our team needs, we got plenty of D. Keep Risto and then signing Brodie is unnecessary. He would block Bryson, Samuelsson and Borgen from cracking the lineup. I'd do D pairings like this

    2020-2021

    Dahlin-Miller
    Risto-Joki
    McCabe-Montour/Pilut

    2021-2022

    Dahlin-Joki
    Samuelsson-Risto
    Pilut/Bryson-Borgen

I think Brodie is exactly what the Sabres need. Defensmen naturally play better on the side they shoot and Brodie would be a solid force behind Dahlin early in his career that gives him some mentorship, physicality, playoff experience, and most of all, great defensive awareness and technique. Risto can't play defense and every Sabres fan knows he has been a liability. Pilut is essentially a less expensive version of McCabe, so I think McCabe expendable. Risto playing on his left side would be tragic and Risto playing with a rookie in Samuelsson on the second pair in 2 years could be disastrous as well. From a culture perspective too, I think we need to move on from him.

#1 reason I wouldn't move Risto is he would be a beast in the playoffs and if you trade him we are the softest team in the league. 2nd reason is that if we trade him, we will get fleeced and he will be a Norris Finalist
