I guess it’s a little more palatable with retention by OTT, but adding Zaitsev for 4 years really is a step backward for the blueline.

Agreed, this trade is a way to work around a real eriksson cap dump, not actually dump his cap. This deal would give the Canucks ~3 million more net cap space over next two years and then ~1.5 less over the subsequent two. The saving grace is the Luongo penalty comes off the books for the latter two
