Description
How does Winnipeg fix their goaltending?
Trades
WPG
  1. Darling, Scott
Additional Details:
Darling has a .928 SV% in 21 games, and is one of the best backups in the league. With Panarin getting bumped up to 6 mil next season, Chicago won't have enough cap space to resign Darling for the 2.5 - 3 million I think he could get on the open market. Trading for him at the deadline makes sense seeing as Hellebuyck is below league average, and Hutchinson is under .900 which is just terrible. Pavelec has proven he can go on stretches, but there is no way he's the solution, with a career SV% of .907. Darling is good enough to be a starter, but I think Winnipeg should acquire him to make a tandem with Hellebuyck, and when Hellebuyck develops into a starter, Darling is still a top notch backup. Should Winnipeg do this, I think the playoffs this season would still be in question, but with a more developed Laine, Scheifele, Ehlers, Dano, Morrissey, Trouba, Connor, and Petan, along with a tandem of more developed Hellebuyck alongside Darling almost assures Winnipeg a playoff spot. Then again, Cheveldayoff doesn't trade often, so this IS a long shot, but if Winnipeg were to make this move, I think it would greatly benefit them. This is a pretty even trade to me, but Winnipeg could arguably be the winner. Acquiring a very good backup/tandem goalie to help them reach the playoffs and FINALLY fix their goaltending would tremendously help.
CHI
  1. Pavelec, Ondrej ($1,950,000 retained)
  2. 2017 3rd round pick (WPG)
  3. 2018 2nd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Pavelec could fill the role of Darling, just with less games played. Pavelec can still be an NHL goalie, but with Chicago riding Crawford, he would only play around 20 games, which could definitely help his numbers improve. A lower workload and a better team around him could really help Pavelec get his game back. Seeing as Winnipeg has a greater chance of not making the playoffs than making them, a 3rd round pick would still not be far off from the second round. Winnipeg should be better next season, therefore they give up their 2018 second round pick instead of their 2017 second. Also, the more picks for Chicago, the better. They could use these two picks as trading pieces for this year and/or next year. Or, Chicago could do what they always do with these picks, draft good players, develop them, use them for a couple years, then keep them or trade them for more pieces. Basically, Chicago gets a replacement backup who's not as good, and pieces they can trade to go for yet another run at the Cup or a chance at young players they can use to retool when their aging stars continue to age. Chicago could arguably be the winner in this trade, especially if they draft someone very good or trade the pick(s) for rental players and win the Cup.
