Description
I don't think Detroit pursues any significant free agents this offseason although Yzerman has been linked to Rust from what I hear. I doubt anyone signs here for anything less than an overpay and that just doesn't make sense for where the team is. I would expect Yzerman to fill out the roster via trade using his cap space as his biggest trade chip.

Trade 1
Vegas sheds cap and Detroit gets roster holes filled.

Trade 2
Pittsburgh moves Pettersson for cap reasons and Yzerman fills the 2LD spot.

Trade 3
Detroit signs Johnny Gaudreau to a 1 year deal in the range of 9-10M just to trade him to Calgary at 50% Retained salary.

I don't think Fabbri will be healthy come the start of the season that's why I bring in Dadonov in trade.

I would start Edvinsson in the minors and call him up when there are injuries if needed.

I didn't sign any of the players for Grand Rapids but I would be trying to fill that team with alot of Detroit's young players to get them playing together and building chemistry.

I would be letting Dadonov, Zadina and Berggren compete for the 2RW spot and Veleno, Rasmussen, Monahan and Suter battle for the 2C spot.

I'm not even going to guess at a coach but I wouldn't be against Paul Maurice, I've always liked him as a coach, but I also don't pay much attention to coaching styles and what would be best for our current roster.

At the trade deadline I would be looking at moving Dadonov with the last retention slot. I expect if Monahan is playing good I would try and resign him, if he's not then no one is going to pay for him even at 50%. I would like to keep Suter, I like him, but if he isn't in the long term plan it shouldn't be hard to trade him at full cap hit. I would be looking at trading Sundqvist as well, but not opposed to keeping him around.

I would expect that Bertuzzi and Larkin would have extensions in place before the deadline, if not then maybe I would think about moving them. I don't see Larkin going anywhere and I think Bertuzzi wants to stay as well.

I would expect this team to be battling for a wild card spot but be just on the outside, maybe similar to Vancouver this year.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Brossoit, Laurent
  2. Dadonov, Evgeni
  3. Martinez, Alec
  4. 2022 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Vegas clears 12.5M in cap and gets a physical depth forward and a LD prospect that could still be a NHL player in the future.
VGK
  1. McIsaac, Jared
  2. Smith, Givani
Additional Details:
Detroit gets a stop gap at 1LD in Martinez, a decent middle 6 forward who can put up 20 goals and odds a good guy in the locker room and as back up goalie. They also get a second round pick for their trouble.
2.
DET
  1. Pettersson, Marcus
Additional Details:
Pittsburgh is able to clear some cap for the offseason and open up a roster spot for POJ. Pettersson seems like the easiest to move as he has no trade protection.
PIT
  1. Grewe, Albin [Reserve List]
  2. 2022 4th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Penguins get a prospect that probably doesn't get a chance in Detroit and a late fourth round pick in this years draft.
3.
DET
  1. Monahan, Sean
  2. 2023 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Calgary moves out over 6M in cap space this year and gets Gaudreau at 4.75M for this one season. Gaudreau then signs an extension for 8 years at around 10M. They do this as they likely won't be able to move Lucic and it gives them enough cap space to sign Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington long term. As well as fill out the rest of the roster. Gaudreau still gets paid and gets an extra year at a high salary.
CGY
  1. Gaudreau, Johnny
Additional Details:
Detroit gets Monahan hoping he can recover from another surgery and still play some decent hockey. They also get a top 10 protected first round pick for taking on 11M in salary for Calgary.

Johnny retained at %50 4.750M. Can't do retention greater than half of their current contract they are on with this site.

I'd do the Calgary deal. I've wondered about a similar proposal.

Needs more for Detroit, I just don’t see them helping out Calgary this much for a late 1st round pick. Monahan is on his second hip surgery, very good chance he never returns to even half the same player he was.
