Description
Leafs make another BOLD move and sign FA John Tavares to a mega 70 million dollar deal. This allows them to run with Matthews/Tavares/Kadri down the middle, probably the best centre core in the league. I’m not saying TO is the only place he can go but he is from Toronto, he’ll get more advertising money here than anywhere else AND the Leafs will be uber competitive. Don’t say that he doesn’t want to play behind Matthews because he isn’t, he’s playing with and will get to enjoy the same benefits Malkin does with Crosby (less responsibility and more success).

We also extend Nylander to a $6M/yr contract (same as Forsberg).

JVR is also extended because this is the year that we push for the cup. We can trade him later if need be.

At this point the 4th line is a crapshoot and it could be a combination of any of Johnsson, Brooks, Hyman, Martin, Soshnikov, Rachel or Gauthier.

This is our window of opportunity, I would be open to more short term FA. Such as Rick Nash who could play in a middle six role and won’t cost us too much. This year we’re all in and would be serious buyers at the deadline.

Keep dreaming. Tavares has spurned Toronto media over this unfounded speculation ever since day one. He isn't leaving NY.

Don't sure if Tavares is worth so much, I know stats are everything but he has declined in the past few years. Don't know how Matthews would sign, getting less 7m long term (your next post) when second line centre Tavares is signed long term 10m. I just feel Tavares in at his peak and wouldn't expect a 10m in the future.

True he probably loves the poor management, league's worst ice, poor attendance and no chance at a championship.

You could argue Tavares isn't a top 3 center in the league anymore (pretty easily), but he's definitely top 10/15 easily. Matthews is still an RFA and he probably deserves more than I offered him, but either way its a shorter term contract and if you compare him to lets say Kane/Toews who got 5 years at just over 6 its about on track for what he'll get. This is the Leafs best chance at a cup and they should go all in, the star power/ability of Tavares could push them over the top
