Training Camp Starts Tomorrow

We are less than 24 hours away from Training Camp. Here is how I can see the roster forming/who wins roster battles.

There will be a battle between O'Connor/Poehling/Archibald. Poehling is young and unfamiliar with the system so I am guessing he is sent down to the AHL to begin the year. O'Connor is set up to have a strong season, is ready to contribute on the PK and I believe he will beat out Archibald and Archibald will start the season as the 13th Forward.

The roster battle for a spot on the 3rd pairing is more tough to predict. In an effort to start the season with strong defensive play and to set the standard for anyone called up, I believe they will start with Rutta-Ruhwedel. Waiver exempt Smith will start the first month or so in the AHL before Sullivan and Reirden begin his transition back to the NHL. What does his mean for Joseph? I have no idea. I could see a left-handed defenseman being traded out around December or January depending on performance.

For those worried about waivers when rosters are being set: remember that if a team claims a player, they have to go on the NHL roster. They cannot be tucked away in the AHL when they are claimed. Now remember how many teams are cap strapped this year. Players are more likely to be claimed midseason when injuries come about. Joseph and Poehling are likely safe for now then.
