Description
So in 2019 lets say MIN sign Duchene 7x8M instead of Nashville to finally give them a 1C

19-20: They trade Zucker to PIT before the season begins and flip Galchenyuk to another team in order to fit Duchene under the cap. With a 1C MIN wins the play in round vs VAN and advances to the playoffs before losing in the 1st round. This drops them from pick 9 to pick ~18, where they select Dawson Mercer instead of Marco Rossi.

20-21: The unforeseen flat cap forces MIN to trade Staal but now they cant afford to take Johansson back. They also dump Bonino to fit everyone under the cap. MIN makes the playoffs and beats VGK in round 1 in 7 games before losing to COL in round 2. Their pick ends up around 24th but again they trade up to 20 to select Wallstedt. They protect Duchene over Sturm in the expansion draft and SEA still takes Soucy (no difference)

21-22: Both Parise and Suter are bought out. Victor Rask is dumped along with a pick to a team looking to reach the cap floor. A cheaper D man is signed instead of Goligoski to make the cap work and MIN keeps Sturm at the TDL instead of trading him for Jost. In the playoffs MIN pushes STL to 7 games but ultimately lose in the first round. No change to draft picks this year as they keep the 24th selection. They also still move Fiala to the Kings for Faber + 19th OA (Ohgren). Greenway is not QO'ed (a la Milano) and the Wild instead sign Ryan Murray and Tyler Motte as UFAs later in the offseason

Haha not a bad little alt-history GM you've got here - good work and fun concept.

I really wonder about the hypothetical where they would have pursued a retain and trade on Suter instead of a buyout. Parise was pretty cooked, so I don't think we could have dumped him, but Suter at 50% seems plausible. Not saying the return would be anything, but the cap space would be huge. And I know they didn't want to risk the cap penalty for retirement, but it certainly would have changed things.
