Description
Just realized why Trocheck may not make sense and Bozak does. John Tavares is a FA next year. He hasn't signed with the Isles yet and who knows if he isn't going to, is waiting for them to make more moves or if he's unhappy with certain things like the stadium situation, etc. If he likes NY like he says he does, he may sign as a Ranger.

Throwing around the idea of buying out Staal. I know that it isn't "ideal" cap wise, but it actually isn't as bad as first thought. DG/Staal while on the team both cost $11.2M. If Staal is bought out and the younger kids (DeAngelo, Beregzelov who played well in KHL, Graves, Pionk) can make that 3rd line/7th D there still would be nearly $4M left in cap space. If Staal isn't bought out and remains, $880K left in space for call ups, etc.
This season will say a lot about Zibanejad and if he can be a teams 1C. If he can't, no big deal as we'd have 3 capable 50 pt Cs. Maybe Miller can play C as well and will rotate some games at C with Hayes who knows. If Zib has a great 60 pt year, awesome. If not and is in 50s it gives Gorts more reason to go hard after Tavares next summer.

If the rangers don't trade for another center though, there would literally be no reason to buy out staal. We have enough cap space to sign zib and bring in a fourth line center with staal on the roster. Play out the year with him on the third line in a smaller role and if he struggles, put him in the press box and buy him out next year where the penalty will be less severe. The only reason the rangers should buy out staal this season is if they want to make a big move which honestly i dont see happening.

And unfortunately tavares to the rangers would be amazing but its only like a 1% chance but crazier things have happened before i guess.

Plus if we sit staal in the press box or AHL, there is a small chance he will waive his no trade clause to get playing time. again unlikely but you can hope
