One way a Marner/Matthews trade makes sense for TOR and the acquiring team is a 3-way trade.

“Tanker” (AZ): takes on futures for a quality roster player and retention

Contender (NSH) trades young roster player and futures gets Marner/Matthews with retention

Toronto gets a couple of roster players and maybe one pick/prospect plus some extra cap space.

It’s not perfect but a team adding Marner/Matthews isn’t going to completely gut its current roster to add them. They’re going to want to compete.

The only other way for Toronto is to trade for pure futures and then turn around and use those futures to acquire players from multiple teams.
