Description
My expectations for what next year will look like with Backstrom LTIRetired.

Step 1: Jensen and Dowd moved at the TDL. Love them as players but I think now is the time to cash in. Iorio looks like he will challenge for a spot next year and Dowd is the exact kind of player someone will overpay for. Pacioretty/Mantha/Edmundson moved for minimal (4th rounders and later) returns.

Step 2: McM, Sandin, Protas bridged. None of them have shown enough yet to go full long term with them, also keeps everything timed with the remainder of Ovi's deal. Sandin gets a little more than Fehervary, McM a little less than Milano, Protas a bit more than a typical 4th liner.

Step 3: A big free agent brought in. Really want Nylander but could also see Lindholm/Stamkos/Guentzel/Reinhart although they don't excite me as much.

Step 4: Lapierre, Miro, Iorio given chances to win roster spots. Miro looks really good in the AHL, Lappy I still don't see the long-term outlook with but has apparently impressed coaching staff.

Step 5: Another solid veteran defenseman brought in by trade or FA. I think Skjei, Hanifin, Forsling will be priced out but would love Tanev/DeMelo/Roy

Step 6: Bring back some bottom of the roster depth. HHA and Malenstyn have done enough to stick around IMO. Phillips looks good but also kind of has to play a top 9 role and might be crowded out. Time for Johansen/Snively/Sutter to make it as NHLers in DC has run out but would happily keep them around in Hershey.

Step 7: Bring in one or two vet-min depth guys. No idea who they should target but this is the area I would most want to let BMac cook in lol

I could see AA and Lappiere being moved pretty easily as well but they're not must-moves at this point. If their 1st this upcoming year isn't too early (11-22 OA range) I could see it being moved if it could bring back a real impact player (Andersson plz) but I don't think they'll make a move just to make a move.

Agree with moving Dowd and Jensen. Just thinking that it seems less and less feasible to fetch a second for Dowd given his injury question mark. A third would be fine at this point.

Would rather not pick up DeMelo and keep that cap space open for any other forward moves. I think Fehervary Carlson and Sandin TVR are fine for the top 4. Iorio and HHA would be a fine bottom pair. Maybe pick up a cheap 1 year player similar to Edmundson to keep some physicality back there.

McMichael probably gets a good bit more (3M to 4.5M depending on the rest of his season) and Nylander probably tops out at 10.5, but you'll also have more cap flexibility with a predicted cap of 87.7M.

did forget the cap is going up more but 2m of that will be taken up by Pacioretty's bonuses. Would be very surprised if McM got more than 2.5 on a bridge deal honestly -- he's looked good this season but don't think he'll get the counting stats needed to make up for the fact that this is his first year as an NHL regular. Frost in Philly is a good comp I think. If they gave him 3-4.5 I would expect a 5 or 6 year deal which might give the best long term value but I would argue they don't really need that value after year 2 anyways. As for a depth defenseman, I would be more willing to go cheaper on a vet if AA, Sandin, Johansen weren't so disappointing this year. HHA has been fine but also putting all hopes on him and a rookie in Iorio isn't the best course of action.

Oops yep I forgot the Pacioretty bonus. 2.5x2 for McMichael could be a good bridge deal. Guess it depends on the points he produces this year.

The defense needs to be retooled if they can't get it together. Really tired of having such a weak net-front presence. I hope that Iorio and HHA can change that, but maybe DeMelo is the answer if not.

Yea being good in front of the net is a real skill that I wish stats heads would actually take seriously. Doesn't mean the same thing as being big or having a lot of hits!
