This message especially goes out to Leafs and Oilers fans.
On this site I have never once seen a good Parayko trade. Everyone trading for him claims either he's basically a cap dump, worried about injuries, or worried about his "horrible" contract. So if he's so bad why do you want him?
On top of all that, Parayko is having his best year in a long time and finally looks recovered from his injury problems. He's playing more physical, joining the rush like he used to, and overall looks great. Sure he makes mistakes every once and a while but no player is perfect.
His contract, which people claim is horrible, is actually a great contract. You get a number one, right handed dman for the next 7 years at 6.5 million AND the cap is going up. 6.5 million is turning into average top 4 defender salary. So even if he falls off when he's like 35 (which I don't think will happen given his playing style), by the time he's that age his contract might be the average salary for a 3rd pair defender. Continuing to look at his contract you will find out that throughout the entire league (of dmen), he averages the 26th most TOI and 5th most ES-TOI per game. The salary range for those dmen start at 8 million in todays NHL pay. Not all of them make that obviously but if they became free agents that's about the recent going rate for a top tier defender. So Parayko is 1.5 million underpaid based on that.
Also, for those claiming the Blues should just trade him so they can tank, what team actively does that?? I mean if you're putting together a serious offer for him it would have to include a number one defensive prospect (we're talking edvinsson level) which one, no team will give up, and 2, the leafs and oilers definitely don't have anyone in that category. If you're trading a player of Paraykos caliber, you're instantly looking to replace him. The Blues have Justin Faulk on the right side and then after that it's literally Kessel, Skinner, and Biakabutuka... So we have no prospect like Clarke that we'd be clearing room for and no prospect in our system that could replace Parayko.
Continuing, Parayko seems like a great guy to have in the locker room. You need leaders through a retool/rebuild and Parayko can be that for the young guys. Defensively, we will have a lot of prospects coming that will need to be supported and they're going to have to turn to someone, likely Parayko, for guidance.
At the end of the day, trading Parayko just doesn't make sense for the Blues, and trading for Parayko shouldn't make sense for other teams. If you're putting out a serious offer it needs to be a MASSIVE overpay for the Blues to even consider it. So throwing out B prospects and late first round picks does nothing for the Blues. If the leafs or oilers are really interested in a dman from the Blues it should be Faulk. Substitute Faulk in for the offers you're making for Parayko and you would have a better deal.
Try not to get heated I just find it boring on this site to see every Blues trade be a bad offer for Parayko. I get the want for a number one right handed dman, but the odds of trading for one are extremely low. You have to draft players like that or in the very rare instance they become a free agent (RIP Pietrangelo). So as leafs and oilers fans, you should be targeting players like Faulk, Tanev, DeMelo (as a free agent if he makes it there), Roy (same as DeMelo), Savard (going to need a big overpay apparently), etc... So basically a very good top 4 defender, but by no means a true number one dman.
If leafs fans want to dump Brodie or Kampf off to the Blues, that costs. Salary is the name of the game in the NHL and we've seen time and time again how big of a part it plays in trades. In this deal, the salaries offset, that's not just doing business though, the Blues are getting nicely compensated for both Faulk and taking back Brodie and Kampf. And if leafs fans say they like Brodie why is he always getting moved in mock trades. If he's fine, just keep him.
Again, if you don't like Ceci, he's not just in the trade for business reasons, he's in the trade as a salary dump.
I'm not really sure how Edmonton would expect to afford a 6.5 million top 4 defender anyway so Faulk and Parayko are probably not the best options for them to begin with.
We’re only interested in chychrun, tanev, dumba and bush it’s a fair ask and someone will pay you this much but it won’t be the leafs, but I highly doubt you guys trade him this year
Justin Faulk had made it abundantly clear in the past, That he absolutely wants no part of playing in Canada. Very few Americans want to play in Canada just due to the fact of much higher taxes in Canada than the US.
