Description
I definitely think the Leafs need to re-model their d-core.
Brodie is already out the door, Gio is practically retired and Liljgren is in need of a change of scenery.
McCabe can stick around because he is on a killer deal, Benoit is a very solid young player, and Reilly is great and on an NMC (Though I wouldn't be opposed to considering moving him).

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND NONE OF THESE MOVES WOULD HAPPEN UNTIL THE SUMMER

Seems like the Leafs should give Niemela a try considering he has been good in the AHL and they could use some puck movement. If he doesn't work, they can find someone else.

I have heard good things about Roy, and he seems like a great player to have on a playoff team. This deal is fair considering the salary cap bump.

Not sure what to make of the Blue's situation as a whole, but once of the three 6.5 million dollar, No move clause defenseman will surely be available this summer. I like Faulk, but I think that the return on any of these guys would be minimal considering the cap hit, age and NMC. Liljegren has some value, and would be useful to the Blues as a cheap, young defenceman, and Akhtiamov is a very solid goalie prospect who the Leafs do not need with Woll and the Hildebeast. I also threw in a third, and a conditional 2026 third which the Blues can option to a 2027 second if they choose.

Overall, I feel like this group would give the Leafs a much better chance at winning in 2025, with a real emphasis on two-way defenceman.

Justin Faulk won't waive for Canada, That's already been made known now for several years.

Moving Liljegren (who has some pretty good stats this season) for an older puck mover that can't defend would really hurt the D core

Kinda funny that Leafs who played the Blues tonight, Leafs won 4 - 1, allowed Blues just 15 shots, and now the Leafs want a Blues Dman?
Next year, Reilly, McCabe, Timmins, likely resigning RFAs Liljegren and Benoit. With Klingberg, Brodie and Giordaono not resigned, surely the Leafs can find the cap to sign a couple of UFAs without giving up good young assets in a trade.

The Blues are a Jekyll and Hyde team up front and have been for a couple of years. Regardless, Faulk didn’t play. And Liljegren gave up at least one breakaway on his mistake at the blue line that I remember and I fell asleep half way through the game.

You can make large scale claims based off of small sample sizes all you want. But if you do so maybe at least make sure that the guy you’re trying to put down played in the game.

Gee, if want to see a Jekyll and Hyde team.....watch the Leafs. Sure the Leafs aren't the middling at best defensively, but some of that has been poor goaltending in November/December by Samsonov and recently by Jones.
