Description
Huge off-season for Adams and the Sabres. As Rochester continues to produce, Adams has to decide whether the Kulich's and Rousek's are ready to make the jump, or round out this roster with some savvy short-term vet signings.

Signings:

1. Martinez: solid vet on the backend. Even at 35, can play minutes, but in Buffalo, will be 3rd pairing. Him and Clifton should form a very good shut down pair. Given Samuelsson's injury issues, can play up the lineup. Oh, did I mention the Rings?

This team is so young. So good. But conversely, there is something to be said about solid vet leadership in the room. And frankly, not sure that is there.

2. Kulikov: a no frills defensive defenseman who will suit just fine as a #7-8. Sabres need D depth.

3. Blueger: being an excellent defender, he fits the 4th line well. Proving in Vancouver he has some offensive game. Has some jam as well. A good compliment to Krebs.

4. Tierney: serviceable depth forward in the cheap. Although Rochester call ups are certainly an option, having someone on the bench that can fit into the bottom 6 can help in not disrupting development.

5. Ruhwedel: another depth D (wanting to leave Johnson and the acquired Livingstone in Rochester for the year). Given the number of left shots on the Sabre blueline, having someone with a right shot here is what helps drive this signing.

Side Notes:

Could sign a back up allowing Levi another year in Rochester. Not sure that is going to help him, or if a quality split time goaltender is going to sign a 1 year deal. Having Levi on the roster may not be the best option, but I think leaving him to marinate longer is worse....... so, he makes the team.

Overall:

The Sabres are chuck full of youth and skill. Still growing pains to be had. I do believe this is a team that can push for a playoff spot.... FINALLY!...... but this depends on Thompson bouncing back from a down year amd Kulich truly being ready to assume 3C duties. This team should be able to score at will, but it will be equally important that Granato pushes a team defense concept. The blueline is good. Really good. But it will only do so much.

BUF
  1. Livingstone, Jake
Additional Details:
Livingstone gives the Sabres a nice looking prospect, who should be ready when Clifton's contract is up. Has looked solid in the AHL. Reinvesting in the system.
NSH
  1. Jokiharju, Henri [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Jokiharju fits the Nashville retool. Young, versatile, contract control. An excellent insurance policy on the soon to be UFA Fabbro, and gives them a rather solid option over Schenn.

I think kulikov would chop his arm off before coming back to buffalo. He absolutely hated it here

Ya know..... I totally forgot about that love affair.

Really, it is about plugging in a cheap D that will work as a #7-8; but yeah..... you are likely right.

Can't imagine Buffalo trading Jokiharju for a pure future

Plus fans would have a fit if this was all he did

Plus, @Swinny’s plan is to have him take over for Clifton after 2 more seasons
But idk that it makes sense to be breaking a guy into the NHL,
taking over the “shutdown role” Swinny has Clifton in
Not to mention, Livingstone will be 27 when Clifton’s contract is up

Doesn’t seem like he’s a good fit if he’s breaking into the league at that age

He played is time in the NCAA. So it isn't like the guy can't play, or is a long term project that is finally figuring it out.

There are points to be made here.

1. With the acquisition of Byram (which you have to love), where does Jokiharju even fit?

2. Now realizing that Jokiharju no longer fits (which is a shame), what on earth do you move him for? It certainly isn't a forward..... Sabres still have more than they know what to do with. So, I made a move on the blueline, which anyone will see..... the Sabres simply lack organizational depth there.

3. Teams actually looking for RD is surprisingly small. And of those, many lack the assets that would make the move make any sense. And of those, how many would acquire Jokiharju thinking he moves the needle.for them?

So unless Clifton or Jokiharju can suddenly play is weak side, I am not sure what other options exist.

Not saying it is perfect, but...... unless Dallas is willing to part with Kyrou (oh, I thought about that).... I dunno.
