Description
Chicago fixes the defensive dropoff after their first pairing, they get two quality picks as well. Toronto avoids losing Gardiner for nothing next year during the cap crunch and hopefully drafts Bouchard or Dobson.
Washington clears cap room for Carlson and get a controllable young RHD for an older soon to be UFA, Leafs get a veteran leader and defensive dman and a late round 1st.
Devils get an good young enforcer to back up their young (small) team and an NHL ready controllable player in Leivo, Toronto moves martins contract and gets a veteran RH dman to help now.

a lottery protected pick for this year is useless because they were already eliminated from the playoffs

What is going on with that Gardiner trade? Is that a pick upgrade only for the best defenseman on the team?

Like the Vanek idea. He is essentially JVR without the price...although to an extent, so is Leivo.

Sorry what do mean exactly? Chicago has a top 10 pick and like an 8% chance of winning the lottery so they’d obviously demand it be protected.

The way I see it a top 10 pick in this years super deep draft translates to an potentially elite Hanafin/McAvoy caliber defenseman that the leafs need so bad which would be worth a late round first next year(in a weaker draft) a late second this year, and one year of Gardiner.

ohhh never mind. I thought you meant a pick that has the potential to win a lottery, which would be any team outside the playoffs. Even still, I'm pretty sure the draft lottery happens before teams are allowed to trade again
