You are probably right. Maybe if he hadn't been playing for under his value for so long, he would give the Wild a hometown discount...but he will probably look for a big payday with free agency. Regardless, I think anyone giving a 29 year old player a 7 or 8 year contract is stupid...I would never do it! So...if those are the terms he would demand/command...the deal is off. My best offer for him, or any other player like him would be 5 years in term tops.

I edited it to 5 years/$6.25 million per. That's the best I would offer...take it, or no deal.

I'm not a Lightning fan, nor one of McDonagh. I'm just saying what he's most likely worth. If I was McDonagh I would turn down that offer
