Description
Detroit has a major cap problem and needs to sign Dylan Larkin. Habs have cap space galore and need a RD for the start of the season. It's a match. Detroit gets cap relief and a decent RD prospect and what should be an early second-round pick for Kronwall and Veleno. Turgeon and McCarron are a reasonable swap of hometown minor leaguers.

Toffoli and Pacioretty are both coming off bad years. Kings are heavy in RWs and thinner on LW, so positionally, it's a good move as well for both clubs. Habs retaining $2.25M of Pacioretty and lifting another $1.5M for Richards offers LAK a lot of freedom at the deadline to make a big move. This assumes LAK re-signs Pacioretty (hence the Villardi or Kupari) and that Habs don't re-sign Toffoli but there's compensation in there if they do.

Wild could use some cap relief and have a ton of experience and prospects at centre. Coyle is the better player, but Byron is no slouch, and the cap room makes this deal good for the Wild.

Agree, and Kronwall has highly restrictive NTC, doubt if Montreal is on his list of "move to" teams.
The usual too high trade value for Patches.

Wouldn't that be exactly why they WOULD do that deal? He's not part of the long term and they desperately need to make room for Larkin and two more players. I'm all for nostalgia (hell, that's all we have to go on in Montreal these days) but Kronwall is the odd man out.

Toffoli for Pacioretty is a pretty reasonable trade that most people would think favours the LAK. Both are UFAs at the end of the season so the risk is the same. So the prospect trade comes for the $3M or so of cap that is opened up.

Kronwall won't be happy, but he has a 10-team list. He also only has a NTC, not a NMC. If DET gets strapped enough, they could simply waive him. There are worse places to play out your career than Montreal. (Montreal could also make a side deal, eat 50% of his salary and trade him on to another team that he prefers. That's not an option for DET)
