Description
Flames in the playoff hunt but want to fill a few holes for a playoff run while creating cap space for next year. Niemi provides depth/experience in the critical backup goalie spot. Shaw is only 26, right shot to help 3rd line RW/C. Byron adds speed, LW/RW flexibility and scoring depth.

Habs are taking back two years of veteran salaries, and the key piece is a promising LD prospect in Kylington who can't crack into the Flames deep defense.

I added a few of the 18-19-20 year olds at the bottom of the depth charts, just because it's nicer to look at the future of this team, not the present.

There's a fine line between optimistic and out of touch. You're right it's too much

The idea for the Habs is to get the young left D prospect (Kylington) out of Calgary. That's the most obvious weakness now in the Habs prospect pool, assuming some of the guys they've drafted over last 2-3 years actually develop properly over the next 3-4 years. The idea with Frolik and Stone is that they may play a year in Montreal at most, but then still both will have some value to be flipped for draft picks in 2019-20, especially if the Habs retain a bit of salary on each of them.

I should have explained that part. I'm certainly not trying to build around Frolik and Stone, but wanting Kylington for the future as the key piece. If the Flames would be willing to give away Kylington for just the last few months of Byron's expiring contract before UFA at trade deadline next February that's even better.
