Description
Flames in the playoff hunt but want to fill a few holes for a playoff run while creating cap space for next year. Niemi provides depth/experience in the critical backup goalie spot. Shaw is only 26, right shot to help 3rd line RW/C. Byron adds speed, LW/RW flexibility and scoring depth. Habs are taking back two years of veteran salaries, and the key piece is a promising LD prospect in Kylington who can't crack into the Flames deep defense.

I'm sure Montreal would much rather get future assets than the scraps that they got.

My thinking was that they would turn Stone and Frolik around in other deals, maybe retain a bit of salary and turn them into draft picks. They both still have value to contending teams, just a bit over-priced. The key point was finding a package that would pry a good left D prospect loose for the Habs. They should be starting to focus on the future defensemen now, they take longer to develop to NHL calibre. There is a good collection of 1st and 2nd round young forwards in the pipeline now, assuming they develop properly over the next 3-4 years.
