Description
This is completely hypothetical. Don't take this overly serious.

It's been 4 games now for Cal Petersen, and it's been 4 stellar games nonetheless for the 24 year old. If this actually keeps up, it makes me wonder that moving on from Jonny may come much sooner than expected. Quickie could be a valuable piece to plenty of teams once healthy, and could fetch a handful of pieces that could help our rebuild.

If Quick goes anywhere, it's likely going to be to Seattle in the expansion draft. It's worth keeping him around for that reason alone, since making Quick available would distract them from going after a young forward or defenseman instead.

Let's just say for this hypothetical scenario that Necas stays in the AHL once he comes to LA and Luff and Wagner play the mandatory games required over this year and next year, and that Seattle gets their draft for the expected 2020-21 season.

Because its rumoured that the Seattle draft will use the same rules as the Vegas draft, this would exclude most of our young players that are worth protecting, even if they all made the NHL in the 2019-20 season (Clague, Brickley, Kupari, Thomas, Vilardi, Anderson-Dolan, etc.)

With that in mind, this is the likely protection list if every player listed above remains with the Kings until the draft:

Forwards:
Anze Kopitar (NMC)
Ilya Kovalchuk (NMC)
Jeff Carter
Tyler Toffoli
Adrian Kempe
Alex Iafallo
And say, Matt Luff for the 7th forward

Defencemen:
Drew Doughty (NMC)
Dion Phaneuf (NMC)
Jake Muzzin

And that would leave Cal Petersen for the goalie

This would leave Austin Wagner, Michael Amadio, Jonny Brodzinski, Jack Campbell, Alec Martinez, Trevor Lewis, etc as the most desirable players available, and trading to protect Wagner and Amadio wouldn't be too tough I would think.

The most recent reports have Seattle joining the NHL in 2021-22, not 2020-21.

That leaves Vilardi, Anderson-Dolan, Kupari, and Thomas exempted in the expansion draft, assuming Vilardi doesn't play 10+ games with the Kings this season. However, Clague, Brickley, and Walker would all require protection (Brickley actually would require protection even if the draft is in 2020-21, because the 2017-18 season counted as a pro season due to the conditions surrounding the signing). Phaneuf and Kovalchuk both come off the books and won't require protection, while Carter and Brown will both be in the final years of their respective contracts and probably won't be protected. So assuming the same rules, and that no other quality players are traded into or out of the team, I would think the Kings go something like this:

Forwards:
Kopitar
Toffoli
Kempe
Iafallo

Defense:
Doughty
Muzzin
Martinez
Clague

Goalie:
Petersen

That leaves Brickley, Walker and all the guys you mentioned as being available. If Quick is gone, one of Brickley or Walker will immediately be taken. If Quick is still around, Brickley and/or Walker would still probably be guy that is taken, but I think Seattle would have to take long and hard look at Quick, especially after what Fleury did for Vegas in their expansion season.
