Description

This team is getting better, but still has some clear needs, and there probably aren't any players on this team who have more trade value to get us the pieces we need than Carey Price. As is often said, "if you want to get quality, you need to give quality.", and right now, there are multiple teams around the League with clear needs in goal. And with all the changes in Philly's front office, you have to figure they're itching to pull the trigger on a big move to shake up their team. And the Habs have all this cap space to use as an asset, this trade sees them take on the contracts of MacD & Lehtera (both are only short term anchors, Lehtera expires after this year, MacD after next) to help sweeten the return. The next 2 trades turn Paul Byron and spare parts into some better overall depth for the bottom of the roster & the AHL team too. The last 2 are just to get picks for expendable veterans on expiring contracts. Jordie gets reunited with his brother, and Mike goes back home to Minny.

The Carey Price contract at $10M is just too big to be movable. It might be different if he was the same goalie he was 3-4 years ago but he's not. He's middle of the pack now, with by far the highest cap hit for a goaltender. For the Habs to move him, which I don't think they would do in any case, they would have to eat a significant chunk of that salary, say $3M per year.

It's not the worst contract in the league since he's still useful and playing night-to-night, and hopefully may regain a top 10 save percentage for some of the years remaining into his late 30's. But it would definitely be one of the most difficult contracts to move.

Many teams in the league are spending $4 to $7 million combined on their goalies, and have two solid options to go to, depending who has the hot hand. In Montreal they spend $11M on goaltending and are basically totally dependent on the fragile health of one guy for the next 8 years.

The Habs will sink or swim with Mr. Price for many years to come. Sure hope he ages gracefully.
