Stone/Duchene likely just a rental so the value isn't the same as if he were signed longer. It also gives them a 1st Round Pick which they currently don't have.

Filppula now becomes the extra forward. Depending on the opponent in the playoffs, the Isles can be bigger playing Komarov or more skilled with Filppula. In case of an injury Filppula can pretty much slot in anywhere on any line, another advantage.

If Brock, Filppula, Sbisa and Kuhnachl walk at the end of the season, everyone else can be re-signed. By the end of the following season, Martin and Greiss coming off the cap combined with natural cap increase should be enough to extend Barzal, Pulock and Toews. Finding a taker for Ladd or Boychuk by then makes it even easier and the youth depth just keeps on plugging into the lineup (Bellows, Koivula, Wahlstrom, Dobson, Wilde, Wotherspoon, Aho). The most amazing part of that is that as those players cycle into the lineup, they're replacing players with salary. The cap is constantly turning over and the Isles can consistently move replaced players for more picks/prospects. This is an actual SYSTEM that is being built by the Islanders right now. I don't know if we've seen anything like this for ourselves in a very long time, I can personally say I was not born when they had anything near a system like this, and most of it is all coming from within. An almost fully grown team from within!
