Fix the Capitals

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2017-18 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
You can afford this cap overage at the deadline b/c the Caps are only taking on the portion of salary to the season's end.

Trading John Carlson at the draft makes complete sense because you've upgraded to the Karlsson that is way better. And used some of what you would have paid JC to extend EK.

You shed the last year of the Orpik hit, and MDZ is younger and cheaper.

Don't need Bowey (and his mistakes) because your right side D going into next year has room to bring Connor Hobbs to the NHL.

Caps have not given up Samsonov, Siegenthaler, Johansen, Bura, Vrana, and so on and so forth.

They've made cap space under the increase in 2018-2019 AND added picks...still have all 1st rounders and more.

You've fixed the defense for a very long time. You've got Holtby in net, plus could open the pipes for Samsonov as NHL backup (to be groomed if you end up trading Holtby some day). And Vanek walks at seasons end so you can re-sign role players like Willy and Beagle, AND have roster space in the bottom six for Nate Walker or Shane Gersich.

If not this year, they'd really be a Cup contender next year. Done.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Oleksy, Steve
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (ANA)
  3. 2019 1st round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Trade happens after the season, before/during the draft. Considering the Caps will be keeping Karlsson and losing their 1st rounder in 2019, this is a pretty good swap and recoup of a pick

Caps get Oleksy back for AHL depth
ANA
ANA Acquires John Carlson 7 years x $6.65M
    - Bieksa is pretty much done, Holzer isn't a top pair guy, Montour is not ready for the spotlight, so Carlson as a sign-and-trade is a pick win for Anaheim
    2.
    3.
    WSH
    1. Anderson, Craig ($1,200,000 retained)
    2. Karlsson, Erik
    3. 2018 5th round pick (OTT)
    OTT
    1. Bowey, Madison
    2. Eller, Lars
    3. Grubauer, Philipp
    4. Mitchell, Mason
    5. 2018 2nd round pick (FLA)
    6. 2019 1st round pick (WSH)
    Additional Details:
OTT gets an immediate fix in net (Grubi), a top defensive prospect with some NHL games under his belt (Bowey), a guy w/ 2nd-3rd line production ability (Eller), and a prospect (AHL-er). Plus WSH would include an extension for Karlsson (making the 2019 pick a 1st rounder).
    4.
    WSH
    1. 2018 2nd round pick (MIN)
    2. 2019 2nd round pick (ARI)
    ARI
    1. Anderson, Craig
    Additional Details:
2-year stop-gap in net for Coyotes. At a very affordable price.

ANA has no need for defense, they are stacked.

Not really enough to take Orpik off our hands, but VAN is dumb so maybe.

Not even close enough for Karlsson. Gruabuer is the only great piece.
