I know a lot Leafs fan, and I’m pretty sure they’d all grunt if the Leafs traded for a left Dman, Mike Green makes more sense than Hjalmarsson rn and I’m aware of how good Hjalmarsson is defensively.

Thornton for one year is definitely in the realm of possibilities for next season. There's a probability this is what Leafs management had in mind.

The Hjalmarsson trade would be a minor tragedy for the team. The Leafs are fully stocked with talent on the LHD, and the big story of this season is the emergence of young defensemen (Dermott, Carrick, Borgman). These are valuable assets.
