Nobody wants Rick Nash, certainly not at that cost.

I understand that fans all think that. But GMs don't. Every year at the deadline people over pay, especially if a team takes 50% of the salary. Look at past deals at the deadline. Patrick Eaves, Eric Staal, Martin Hanzal, Andrew Ladd, Antoine Vermette. None of these guys were worth what the teams paid for them, but it happens every year. This is a realistic price for a Rick Nash this year, especially if a defenseman is added for a team that needs help on the back end.

I really doubt Tampa gives up their best prospect and 2 firsts for 2 years of an aging McDonagh

28 isn't exactly aging

Rangers aren't actively shopping McDonagh, so in this scenario, if a Tampa wants him, they're going to have to send a package like this to get him. Especially if the Rangers eat 2 million of his salary and send them a decent B prospect who is ready for a bottom 6 role with another organization next season.

You can slam these deals all you want, but the fact is, at the deadline, people overpay. This is deadline market value. I don't think Desharnais is worth a 3rd or Nash is worth two potential 1st rounders, but that's what they could get. Remember, the Lightning got Callahan and 2 1sts for a 40 year old Martin St. Louis...
